Looking for a decent Chinese restaurant in Las Cruces is a fruitless effort. It appears that this city just does not draw the kinds of chefs needed to serve up quality Chinese cuisine. Oriental Palace is one such letdown.

After reading promising reviews, we decided to try it. It is a bland, small, white-walled place with a few "required" Asian drawings on the walls. The food is just not good. We tried Egg Flower soup (bland and salty), Curry Chicken, which had no real curry taste and way too much onions, and Mongolian Beef, which I can only describe as weird - not like any MB dish I've had before. Even their fried rice was nothing more than regular rice with way too much soy sauce in it.

Alas, Las Cruces NM and Oriental Palace is not the place to get a good Chinese meal. We've been told by locals that we have to travel to El Paso for that.

We went shortly after their grand opening. The food was unimaginative. Fresh Sushi and a Mongolian Grill are a better choice. Their floor staff who cleaned tables and refreshed drinks were overwhelmed and a bit rude with the crowded restaurant.

This small restaurant is located in La Mission Plaza, which is an older, U-shaped complex of offices and shops. The menu is of reasonable size. Most entrees, except seafood, seem to cost $7.95. We had the beef (sirloin pieces) and oriental peas, which had a few pieces of celery and onion as well. It came with our choice of white or brown rice. The pieces of sirloin were tender so were probably marinated. Most of the dishes are mild, unless marked "HOT" in red. If we were to go again, we wouldn't both have the same thing, so we could enjoy more flavors. The tables are plain, most with 4 chairs, but two tables were put together to seat a larger party. There is plenty of parking, especially in the evening, as most of the shops and offices are closed.

We did the three person dinner special, make sure you find a big enough table first. Instead of doing your food in courses, you get it like at one lump sum!
The wonton soup was excellent, the egg rolls good and the fried shrimp was heavy on the tempura batter.
The fried rice isn't typical fried rice we are all used to the egg, peas and carrots it consists of rice and lots of soy sauce and not very appeasing to the palate.
The chicken chow mein is heavy on the cabbage. The pepper steak was fair due to the fact that the pieces are cut in huge chunks-big turn off! No fung shui looks like chaos.

$6 for a good meal and glass of Tea is tough to beat. The place doesn't look great but the food is an excellent value for a sit down Restaurant.
