This was the best holiday ever, the whole experience was amazing, from the welcome to the luxury room the food and drink was sensational. And of course the safari, we went out 6 times, seen the Big 5 animals , up so close to elephants, Lions, giraffes was a highlight. Can’t say enough about this wonderful experience. Thanks Sanctuary Makanyand Safari Lodge.

Having spent four days in Cape Town we flew to Johannesburg we had a driver take us 3 1/2 hours to Makanyane, pleasant drive (last 45 mins on gravel road!). We were greeted on arrival by some smiling faces and we knew we’d arrived. The whole place is beautiful, the room is by far the most luxurious I’ve stayed in.
Everyone at The Sanctuary is amazing! Anything you can think of, they have already thought of it. From the 3 glass walls in your lodge to the hot water bottles for the morning drive, the staff (doesn’t seem right saying staff as they feel like friends) are so kind and thoughtful, the drives are unforgettable, the animals are of course incredible but the guides make it all the more special. BIG thanks to Dylan who was our guide, could not have asked for more. The food was also top class, from the brunch to the dinner, everything was soo good (Ostrich my new favourite meat). The groups are quite small when you go on the drives so you get to be quite close, sharing awesome experiences but it’s also very easy to be alone. The massages in the lodge are amazing also, done right in front of the river on your private veranda.
I cannot recommend this enough and I can’t wait to return next year!

Well where do I start! From beginning to end we were made to feel like family by all the lodge staff. They all went out of there way to enjoy a chat, share stories and make you feel relaxed and at home right from the start. The rooms, all were very private, with super comfy beds and spotlessly clean. The food, beautifully presented, plentiful and delicious. The complementary well stocked mini bar was a bonus. And as for the game drives... nothing can beat speed parking your sundowners, jumping in the truck and careering along dodging the "shrubbery" when the shout comes out that one of the rarest animals at Madikwe has just made an appearance! Phew!! Just remembering that evening wears me out, lol. Thank you so much Kaizer, (only the most eagle eyed ranger on the planet!), for getting us to the last remaining pack of wild dogs in Madikwe in the nick of time! Lions, rhinos be seen mostly anywhere, but the dogs are what makes Madikwe special. Along with the guys and girls that run The Sanctuary Makanyane that is! And thanks for the big goodbye hugs from Lynette and Kaizer. We miss you all already. We will be back!!

Room Tip: Room 1 is closest to the main lodge, if you don't want a longish walk on uneven crazy paving in the dark.

Mankayane safari lodge was our last in the four lodge itinerary in Madikwe reserve in the north west section of South Africa. I’m now in a position to observe the differences in all these lodges and locations. The Mankayane lodge rooms are spectacular in design, privacy and facilities while the dining area is sensibly layout for intimate or casual dining depending on your travel group or who is there for your stay.
The available menu is wide and varied with a distinctive local flavour expertly prepared and presented at a very professional level. The whole staff are very friendly, informative and professional and our driver/guide Jacques was the most friendly, knowledgeable and delivered his presentation with a good splash of humour. Nothing was a problem and the park rules of three vehicles at a sighting was sensible and observed by all groups. It is a distinct advantage that allows everyone access to get their best photos in a timely manner. Your day here like all the lodges a full on, up at 6am and finishing the evening safari at 7:30pm so be prepared. In June the morning and evening temperatures are low so bring your very best warm clothing but you will never see rain.
The only scary moment was arriving on our flight 30 minutes late and having to rush to the border crossing which was one hours drive away. It closes at 7pm and doesn’t open till the morning, we made the closing by 5 minutes, so give yourself time if that is how or when you expect to arrive at the border.

Thank you for your review! We are very happy that you enjoyed your stay with us and delighted that we came out tops in your comparison of the lodges that you stayed at in Madikwe.
Your point about arriving from Botswana is very useful, the border does close at 7 pm and sometimes the queues at customs can be fairly long, so it is always best to allow yourselves enough time.

Thank you Makanyane. You exceeded all expectations even after reading all the excellent reviews. The service provided by the friendly and efficient staff was outstanding in all areas. We wanted for nothing. The accommodation is gorgeous. Fine dining ensured that we savoured every meal. The wine list showcases some of South Africa's finest wines and the "barman" is very knowledgeable. Our guide on the game drives was a veritable fountain of knowledge which he freely shared keeping us entertained and informed. We were kept comfortable with hot water bottles, blankets and cosy ponchos on the chilly evening drives. The reception committee with a hot facecloth at the end if the game drives was wonderful. It's these small details that impress. We arrived as strangers and left three nights later feeling like part of the family. Highly recommend Makanyane for a special treat. Oh and the animals were spectacular.
