We had a fabulous two-night stay at Cliff Lodge – our favourite guest-house of our short trip to the Western Cape. Gill is the epitome of genuine hospitality – totally focused on ensuring that her guests enjoy their stay and a font of local knowledge and trip suggestions – wonderful! Nico is a great guy, makes fabulous coffees – a genuine barista – not bad for an avid Chelsea fan. Priscilla and the other ladies were always attentive and never failed to greet their guests with a warm smile. And at Cliff Lodge there is so much to smile about – the house occupies a spectacular location - perched on the edge of the Atlantic with stunning views of the rugged coastline – feels like the Cote de Granit Rose (Brittany, France). The rooms are luxurious with meticulous attention to every detail of comfort. Our sea-front North room had a great veranda perfect for listening to the lulling surf crashing against the rocks. We used the plunge/swimming pool several times for a bracing dip – much appreciated in the comparative sultry 30 C temperatures. The breakfasts are wonderful – we particularly recommend the Eggs Benedict with salmon or bacon – delicious.
Gill recommended that we dine one night at Kloeks @ Home and it proved to be the stand-out meal of our trip (R450). It’s a small, family-style restaurant – almost feels like a private house party – bring your own wine - the owner was welcoming and attentive – and the food delicious – mussels starter was delicious, my chicken Thai green curry was to-die-for and my wife adored her hake dish.
Conversely we’d also booked the Chaîne des Rôtisseurs restaurant in Grootbos Private Nature Reserve (not Gills recommendation) and we were utterly disappointed – sterile atmosphere much like sitting in a hotel lobby in mid-West USA with elevator music and practically empty, bland uninspired cuisine, and by far the most expensive meal of our stay (R1,300) – avoid.
We cannot recommend Cliff Lodge highly enough, Gill and Gideon were excellent hosts, providing us with ample information before our arrival and being attentive and utterly hospitable during our stay – not surprising given Gills West Cork (Ireland) roots – she and her team are the personification of ‘cead mile failte’. We sincerely hope to return some fine day – Slan Abhaile.
