The Waldheim could be amazing, but the food is absolutely terrible...except for breakfast. Meals are from the 1950s - think canned corn, jello and ham. If you're vegetarian, forget it...there's barely anything on the menu. For the money you pay, it should and could be far far better. All they need is a new chef with an imagination!

There aren't enough words to describe this place. Summer's are full of life and family tradition; fall is full of peace, beauty, and tranquillity. We are always here each fall, and have been coming here for nearly twenty years. The perfect place for artists, writers, photographers, and most importantly, family. The folks make you feel like family.

Rustic cabins, working fireplaces with huge wood supply, no phone, TV, or clocks. Beautiful lake front setting. Perfect if you are looking to get away from everything, and are NOT interested in 5 star luxury hotel amenities. No WIFI in cabins, but available in the vicinity of the dock/library area. Limited cell phone coverage. The dining room was completely rebuilt from the ground up before this season. It has massive timber frame ceiling beams that fascinated the amateur engineer in me.

My family has been going to the Waldheim for a decade now, having been introduced to it by friends who have been going for over a quarter of a century. Every year is filled with a group of family and friends, both old and new.

Don't expect a "big box hotel" experience, there is no plush carpet. fluffy duvet, mint on the pillow experience. These are ADK cabins, wood, tweed, little throw rugs, great big fireplaces, and simple decor. There is no wi-fi in the cabins, chances are that you won't find a cell phone signal, and there is no cable (or televisions for that matter), and that is the charm of the place. It is a place to unplug and reconnect.*

Entertainment? There is a beautiful lake. The camp has canoes, kayaks, and paddle boards to rent, or you could rent a small motorboat for skiing nearby. You will find that conversations, board games and books (there is a nice library) will suddenly reappear in your life.

Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are included in the cost of the stay, and they are simple, hardy, American fare. All the food is fresh and wholesome. The service is amazing, and very personal. Each night there will be a desert with will astound you.

*There is a wi-fi connection in the camp's library, as well as a phone for telephone calls (no additional charge).

Room Tip: The website has a map of the cabins - its a great resource

If the headline above sounds good, then The Waldheim is for you. It's been in the same family for 5 generations I believe and it's a series of 17 cabins situated on Big Moose Lake in the Adirondacks. It's everything an Adirondack vacation should be. Our cabin was a two minute walk from a beachfront area of the lake (where bonfires were lit at night) and where we fell asleep to the haunting sounds of loons. In the morning, we were awakened by the licking of flames in our fireplace set by the fireboy who comes in at 5:30 a.m. to light your fire in the beautiful stone fireplace. No need to set any alarms because sometime around 7:30, someone walks around and rings a bell by hand to awaken you. Then another bell is sounded at 8 a.m. to signal it's time for breakfast. Sound heavenly? It is. I've never had more stress free vacation. You can swim, hike, canoe, kayak, or just sit on your porch and practice guitar, as I did. All meals are included in the price. The food is quite good and the portions are normal sized which I really appreciated! My only hesitation to recommend The Waldheim so highly is that I might be making it harder for me to return. P.S. I had the best massage of my life here, done my a woman named Lou Getty who worked at The Waldheim as a teenager but is now a professional masseuse and so much more.

Room Tip: wifi is only available near the main office, not in the cabins....
