Most horrific experience

1.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 4 Mar 2023
My husband and I went for our honeymoon and this was the worst trip ever, no refunds, no warm water for a week, almost no electricity, safety hazards, trips being cancelled, double bookings ect. We do not recommend this place.

In hindsight the warning signs were there months before we arrived when we couldn’t get hold of the owner for months at a time before arriving. Always an excuse that he was on charters with no signal which we later found out was a lie because he hadn’t been to Mozambique for at least 3 months prior to our arrival and he was wasn’t there for all of December, the busiest time of year. We were worried that the place didn’t even exist but eventually we got hold of him and he assured us all was well and was ready to welcome us for Christmas.
After days of driving we got to Vilanculos, drove past lots of lovely looking accommodation we finally found eden bay eco lodge (which has zero sign posts on the way) and our worse fears were realised. The pictures show a beautiful, luxury tented accommodation with beautiful pool area and manicured gardens….you drive in to an over grown, not looked after garden area, run down tents and a pool deck that was completely missing and needed to be renovated, a complete health hazard. The general decking areas around the site was also in need of repair with slats missing and many lifting when you walked on them. The tents themselves had no fans and no mosquito nets and there was no power! No where to plug in fridges and keep our food from going off. On top of it all there was someone staying in the tent we booked and we therefore had no accommodation for the night. Not ideal over the busiest period of the year and for the price we were paying.
The owner is a good talker and always has an answer for everything (as I’m sure he will for this review) and takes zero responsibility for the disaster that is Eden bay and he just outright lies. Its now apparent why he is never there and hasn’t been for 3 months or probably much longer as if he was he would have to deal with all these unhappy customers face to face. That he leaves to someone left in charge called Bernard who you have to feel sorry for. He was defeated and deflated and says this always happens, they over book, the place needs serious maintenance and he is always dealing with unhappy people. Also no sight of this high end chef, bar and restaurant area. We asked for a refund which he refused (even though someone was staying in our room and the place was run down and a health hazard), and said we were being unreasonable because we got there 45mins before check in 😂. I’d like to have seen him build an entire pool deck, upgrade the tents and walk ways and evict the guest staying in our room (who were out on a boat) and have it ready for us in 45 minutes.
Maybe a few years ago it did look like the photos, the owner was around and had a passion for his business but in 2022 I can safely say is no longer the case. The accommodation we eventually found said they often get guests coming from Eden Bay with the same experience.
Do not go there, don’t waste your time and money, you will be sorely disappointed.

Eden Bay Lodge is one of the most pristine destination spots in Mozambique, and most importantly, easily affordable to the traveller wanting to experience what the ocean has to offer.

Eden Bay Lodge is all about adventure. It overlooks the Bazaruto Archipelago and is managed by Paul and his very accomplished and experienced crew.

An absolute must is to hire your boat for a day or two (or every day like we did). Experience exhilarating game
fishing, world class snorkeling, seafood lunches perfectly prepared on untouched beach spots in the middle of the ocean, eat your catch at night whilst you enjoy a cold one on the balcony of a private unit overlooking the archipelago.

You can naturally also just lazy around the pool if you have had your fill of adventure for the day, or read a book overlooking the islands and ocean.

Eden Bay Lodge is the perfect get away for the ocean lover, and we will be back.

Thank you to Paul and his crew. What a remarkable experience. Definitely one we will never forget .

I would like to share our wonderful experience at EdenBay Eco Lodge & BazarutoEncounters Innovative Holidays. This lodge is perched on an a slope, overlooking the Bazaruto arquipelago, making it the perfect spot for glamping. The ever present cooling breeze, also keeps away the pesky mosquitos.
From the moment you set eyes on the magnificent, ever changing views, you will be mesmerised. The ultimate place to relax and reconnect with your family and nature.
They offer self catering or fully inclusive (expect drinks), which is the option we chose. The accommodation was superb. The chef, Samuel, in my opinion deserves a Michelin star. Everything he prepares is scrumptious. We have had our share of seafood and chicken over the years and I can honestly say, his was the best. His casquinhas are delectable.
Their skipper is obviously well versed in the seas, as we not only saw dolphins, whales, turtles but a Dugong as well.
All the islands were devoid of tourists, so we literally had paradise to ourselves. So if you can go, go now. They currently have C19 specials which makes heaven affordable. 🙂
As a bonus you will be supporting communities that depend on tourism.

I'm not sure where to start really...I like to do A LOT of research before trips, and a big drawcard for me is eco tourism. I seek out places that are not only conscious about our dying planet, but that actually do something about it! That's what initially drew me to Eden bay lodge. From the start, dealing with Tracy with my millions of questions, it was seamless and professional and I could tell immediately that this would be something special... Fast forward to our arrival - I made the mistake of not reading their very clear instructions to NOT FOLLOW THE GPS... Big mistake, we got stuck in the sand on the wrong road to nowhere. I panicked, being my first time to Mozambique and called The lodge... and hey presto, they came to our rescue and showed us the right route (that I should have followed in the first place) to our new home from home. Ah, the views and privacy and warm hospitality we have had in the past few days have been of a calibre that I really haven't experienced often. Paul and his team pour the kind of geniune love into the lodge that can't be faked, nothing is a problem and they gladly assisted with any request we had! We opted for self catering, but I tell you, the smells coming out of the kitchen as we walked by from our beach swims were amazing! There was an all inclusive package with all meals included which I will definately take next time, dinner tables are set out in the garden with lanterns lit... Simply magical! I also have to mention the private beach, we walked down to "Marula Beach" early on our first morning and what lay before us was out of a coffee table book... We just felt spoilt rotten! This has been one of our most memorable holidays and we can't wait to come back with some family for another spoil. Thank you Paul, Tracy and your wonderful team... You guys have made this one of the best holidays I have ever had!
