Palmeiras Lodge in Vilankulo: My favorite choice

Review of Palmeiras Lodge
5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 13 Aug 2019
· The best location in Vilankulo, close to the beach and few minutes from the center of Vilanculos. One of the best owners we ever found in our travels: very kind, full of suggestions for the activities on the bazaruto archipelago and much more, but very discreet and not too pressing. The place has a beautiful garden around the lovely bungalows and a swimming pool. Great

I recently stayed at Palmeiras Lodge in Vilanculos. Upon arrival, we were promptly checked in and shown to our room... we were shown to a small dingy little room and left there. I looked back on the pictures shown on Air BNB and this accommodation was not represented AT ALL. I went back to reception and complained and explained what I was expecting, I was shown two different rooms I could move to that on first look seemed more appeasing.

We moved to one of the rooms shown to us and as I began to look around the list of issues were endless. There was an old bar of soap with pubes still in the bathroom. Only 1 out of 4 of the overhead ceiling lights worked. The door handle was broken and sharp. The mosquito net had holes in it everywhere, some were small but others were very large, defeating the point of the mosquito net. The pillow case was dirty with what looked like dried blood. The air con, although it made some sort of noise, did not cool down any inch of our room. We were only given 1 towel. There was an unlocked cupboard in the room full of some sort of musky linen that we had to lock ourselves.

It states on their Air BNB listing that it has a mosquito net, air con and WiFi. Which is partially why we chose this place. It states the WiFi is continuous. Well the mosquito net has massive holes, the air con is a piece of garbage and the WiFi is non existent and only works at reception. It was stated that breakfast was included, another reason we chose this place, and all we got was stale cornflakes and battered bananas. It’s absolutely outrageous.

All of these issues were reported to the host. The only issue that was rectified was we got an extra towel. I have given them 24 hours upon arrival to sort the rest however nothing has been done. It’s worth noting that they barely speak English and I barely speak Portuguese so there is a language barrier.

There was also spiders and centipedes (both of which are poisonous) EVERYWHERE. While I am aware this is Africa there was a lot on the floor level with massive cobwebs that looked weeks old. It just seemed like it had gone weeks without a clean.

In general the place was very dirty, and was completely misrepresented in the pictures we were shown. Based on the accommodation we were given and similar properties I have looked at we massively overpaid, other properties around us (that are actually a lot nicer) vary in price from 30-40 GBP.

I have to say I am extremely disappointed in this property. In pictures it seemed like the nicest, however it was the worst and hostels we had stayed in previously were of higher standard. We only stayed 2 out of the 4 nights we booked and got a refund for the 2 nights we didn’t stay and went elsewhere to somewhere much nicer.

Not okay. They sell the room with aircon. During the checkinn they tell to switch aircon on for only 2 hr so they can safe money. During summer you can not sleep without airco or a fan. They where not offering even a fan!

After complaining at booking.com they start to turn the story by lying.

Worst attitude ever!

Don’t stay here, we booked mainly because on booking.com they stated they have air conditioning. Turns out they do but they only put it on for 2 hours beginning of the evening. So the rest of the night you will be extremely hot because they don’t even have a fan in the room! The have a generator but say it’s to expensive for them to keep it running all night. If so, they should not advertise with air conditioning and at least have a fan! We walked away and contacted booking, the hotel told booking there was no problem and we could use the air conditioning all night, they straight up lied to cover up. Sometimes it’s a matter of opinion or maybe a language problem but this was just a scan and I suggest people to stay away.

Please stay away. Dishonest people are managing this place. We booked a room with AC, but when we arrived they said they would only turn it on for a maximum of 2 hours to safe money. After that they lied to Booking.com about it.

I spent a night in this Lodge and even if the place itself seems quite ok, the way it works it's a bit strange.

Arrived and no one at the reception, walked around the property to find someone and finally found it. Reservation? They had no clue about reservation. Try to find a room... They did, but we've booked 2, so they had to find another room... It wasn't easy. After a while they had no clue where was the key for my room... Hilarious!

The rooms are good enough, just next to a not so great beach but is a nice place that can be a great place with small improvements.

You can probably have a great stay here, but be prepared to have some fun during the check in/out.
