I recently stayed at Palmeiras Lodge in Vilanculos. Upon arrival, we were promptly checked in and shown to our room... we were shown to a small dingy little room and left there. I looked back on the pictures shown on Air BNB and this accommodation was not represented AT ALL. I went back to reception and complained and explained what I was expecting, I was shown two different rooms I could move to that on first look seemed more appeasing.
We moved to one of the rooms shown to us and as I began to look around the list of issues were endless. There was an old bar of soap with pubes still in the bathroom. Only 1 out of 4 of the overhead ceiling lights worked. The door handle was broken and sharp. The mosquito net had holes in it everywhere, some were small but others were very large, defeating the point of the mosquito net. The pillow case was dirty with what looked like dried blood. The air con, although it made some sort of noise, did not cool down any inch of our room. We were only given 1 towel. There was an unlocked cupboard in the room full of some sort of musky linen that we had to lock ourselves.
It states on their Air BNB listing that it has a mosquito net, air con and WiFi. Which is partially why we chose this place. It states the WiFi is continuous. Well the mosquito net has massive holes, the air con is a piece of garbage and the WiFi is non existent and only works at reception. It was stated that breakfast was included, another reason we chose this place, and all we got was stale cornflakes and battered bananas. It’s absolutely outrageous.
All of these issues were reported to the host. The only issue that was rectified was we got an extra towel. I have given them 24 hours upon arrival to sort the rest however nothing has been done. It’s worth noting that they barely speak English and I barely speak Portuguese so there is a language barrier.
There was also spiders and centipedes (both of which are poisonous) EVERYWHERE. While I am aware this is Africa there was a lot on the floor level with massive cobwebs that looked weeks old. It just seemed like it had gone weeks without a clean.
In general the place was very dirty, and was completely misrepresented in the pictures we were shown. Based on the accommodation we were given and similar properties I have looked at we massively overpaid, other properties around us (that are actually a lot nicer) vary in price from 30-40 GBP.
I have to say I am extremely disappointed in this property. In pictures it seemed like the nicest, however it was the worst and hostels we had stayed in previously were of higher standard. We only stayed 2 out of the 4 nights we booked and got a refund for the 2 nights we didn’t stay and went elsewhere to somewhere much nicer.
