Dinner with a twist

Review of Pescador
4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 5 Jan 2016
We stumbled into Pescador Restaurant more or less by accident, as the place we had initially tried to eat at was fully booked. Pescador was the nearest alternative. Because it was pretty full, too, the waiter asked as if we minded to wait upstairs in their bar until a table became available. No problem for us, as we felt like a drink and weren't in a rush. In the end, we ended up staying and even dining in the small, comfy bar with a decent selection of drinks and a popular snooker table. It all looked more appealing to us than the rather packed verandah and indoors eating area. Despite being away from the real restaurant, both the service and food were good (we had Prawns and Calamari – the menu isn't particularly big, so don't expect anything ordinary) and the evening was a pleasant surprise.

We came here recently to see if after our trip of a year ago it was still really good. The last time we came the town was pretty empty due to the troubles on the road, and a lot of places had let their standards drop with a small skeleton staff keeping things going. Not Pescador. It was as remembered. Nothing has changed. Best prawns in Vilankulo. The staff are also great, and They just has a really good ambience to go with the awesome food. From what we could see the accommodation is also good and it is pretty central. The peri peri sauce that comes with the prawns should be an export, they would make a fortune....We ate a whole bottle! Do yourself a favour if you are in town and check it out, it is a winner.

We entertained some friends over dinner.
We like the venue because of the friendly service, but feel that it's claustrophobic because of high walls and no view. It's best described as Sandton near the sea!
Dinner was served around the pool the two salads the wives had were amazing
We agreed that the curry that my guest and I both had was good except for the portion which was very small and we both felt hungry after finishing the meal
The biggest down side was the music that we had to share that other guests were playing while swimming - on a few occasions we had to ask for it to be turned down.

We had dinner here on April 7th. There weren't very many diners and our waiter asked if we wanted to sit upstairs in the bar area to wait for our dinner. We ended up staying there, it was so comfy, loved the funky high- backed chairs and decor and the view out to sea. We had the MOST AMAZING prawns here. I had classic garlic prawns and my boyfriend had the prawns basted in beer. We ate at many places in Vilankulo during our stay here but this place was far and away the best. Their home- made peri peri sauce is also utterly legendary. I have no idea why it was relatively quiet, perhaps a weekday, off- peak. Well we may have benefitted from the lack of others around- the staff were on the ball and really made us welcome. Incredible food, lovely place, great people.

This is the place to visit, we stayed at Pescador for a night's break away. Beautiful decor, clean rooms, fantastic linen, very nice views, great (15 out of 10) service. The food is absolutely amazing, well balanced with flavours to remember forever. Our next visit is already planned and I can not wait....

Room tip: Take one of the rooms with the beach view, the sunrise is beautiful.

It started with not being collected from the airport despite contacting the hotel a couple of days before and receiving a email promising some one would be there to meet us, they then lied to us and said some one had been at airport but earlier, the time they quoted was just after we had arrived, my husband checked the time on his atm slip and yes we were at airport waiting for them. So big fat lie, no apologises or gestures to make up for the fact it cost approx £22.00 for a 15 min taxi trip!
The good points for this hotel is the beds are very comfortable, the bathrooms great and the waiters and house keeping staff delightful. The bad is it is surrounded by a 5m high wall with electric fence, had no were comfortable to sit, 2 large TVs that are on all the time at full volume and competing with the music at the same time, the management were not interested. We did get upgraded to a better room but the previous room was very small. We felt claustrophobic and generally unwanted except by the waiters who were very kind. The interior is heavy and more on the lines of a bar/pub there is no sea view and the walk to the beach is down the road then down a high walled alley. I just wanted to go home it was my idea of hell, we escaped to another hotel and then the magic of Mozambique opened up. If you like drinking lots of beers and enjoy DSTV this is hotel for you, however if your going to Vilanculos to experience the magic of the country this is not for you.
