Vilanculos is not my favourite Moz town, for all sorts of reasons, one of which is that the better standard accommodation is over-priced. So it was good to find and try Hotel Bernna, just off the main street heading to the bay. It’s not that easy to find as the sign board is hidden, but it’s not too far after the Total filling station. The bar/restaurant/ reception is misleading, more ‘baraca’ (informal street/market bar) than stylish hotel. But don’t be put off. The rooms are very well done, with excellent beds, top quality mosquito nets, a fridge, A/C if needed, and a good shower. Bedding and towels were decent quality too, and there were some nice little touches that demonstrate that someone is trying to set high standards (the way the towel was displayed on the bed etc). At 3,000Mt b&b ($50), this is a really good option in Vilanculos, where there is plenty of basic accommodation, and quite a few very expensive places, but not too much in the mid-range. The little restaurant doesn’t have an extensive menu, but the fish was very good and, on a cool wet night when this tired traveller couldn’t be bothered to wander out, I was made most welcome and comfortable.
