This hotel was pretty dingy - I was glad we were only staying one night. Although owners seemed to be trying to bring it back to life, the negatives just outweighed the positives. When you see cardboard taped over the windows with a sign saying "Entrance around corner" you know something is not right.
The biggest problem in the small room, was that the toilet bowl leaked around the base of the bowl. And...the following morning, there was apparently some kind of disenfectant sprinkled all over the carpets in the hallway. The smell was overwhelming. When we mentioned both of these to the management upon our departure, they essentially shrugged their shoulders.
Continental breakfast was completely forgetable. And ...the fact that winos were lounging on the grass in the park across the street didn't help...although that was not owners fault.

Not bad for the price. On the plus side, the room was newly renovated, good strong air conditioning, good price, in the middle of town, free parking. The breakfast was not great, not many choices, the walls were super thin, and you could hear all sorts of neighborly activity next door.No coffee maker or frig. The town was interesting, but it pretty much closed at 5p, which is like no town I've ever been to. A population of 6500, which perhaps explains things. If I went again, I'd stay bc of the low price, which I got on Expedia. The staff weren't so responsive, perhaps a language barrier.

Great location in front of the park in charming city!
Good price/value for a renovated room.
Disappointing breakfast, there could have been none since there are some many nice cafés and restaurants within a walking distance.
Don't be afraid of the outside look, the room I had was at the opposite of my first impression of the building.

Room Tip: The one queen bed are really small compared to the king bed or 2 queens

The St. Charles is a historic hotel undergoing renovations. If you prefer a brand new chain hotel this is not for you. Rooms are clean, hotel staff is very attentive and the location can't be beat. Walking distance to fabulous restaurants, coffee shops and unique shops.

I enjoy staying in older hotels. They provide character and ambience lacking in newer hotels. However, what character and ambience the St Charles once had, has disappeared after several bad renovations.

Each area had it's own unique and unpalatable smell.

The bed was incredibly hard.

Pass on the complimentary breakfast - real food can be found near by in one of Hudson's good restaurants.
