- Unique, bi-level loft excellent value for space
- Free Wi-Fi and complimentary breakfast
- Original, decentralized design helps to minimize noise

- Proximity to northern end of runway can mean noise from jet engines
- Aging furniture and décor
- Car required – not much within walking distance

On a road trip to the northern reaches of Vermont, I used the hotel as an overnight stop. I selected the hotel based on a very affordable two-room suite which was slightly more expensive than the one bedroom. The hotel is located about 20 minutes from the heart of Albany and 5-10 minutes from the airport terminal.

This Residence Inn maintains the original footprint. The A-frame buildings and exterior room access were staples of the first Residence Inns, and I have to admit feeling nostalgic for this design. For one, parking is literally right outside the door or around the corner from your room entrance. Additionally, the decentralized plan helps to ease congestion and minimize noise from fellow guests. There are no doors slamming or people running through the halls. The multitude of buildings also makes the hotel feel more like apartment-style living which was the initial intent for Residence Inn. Along with these positives come some negatives. It was pouring rain upon arrival, so the walk to the 2nd floor meant exposure to the elements. Due to the multitude of A-frame buildings, there are no elevators, so a 2nd floor room is not accessible to those with limited mobility.

The bi-level loft is no longer built in Residence Inns, and that is a shame. The bi-level worked out well for me and my friend, as it allowed us to have separate spaces for $20 more than a one bedroom. It is a great value in terms of space. The bi-level loft, as advertised, spans two stories. The first floor encompasses a bedroom with ensuite bathroom, kitchen, and living area. The second floor consists of another bedroom and ensuite bathroom. With this being said, it is not ideal for everyone. The main drawback, other than ascending a set of stairs, is that the upstairs bedroom is an open concept. This means that sound can travel from the living room and reduce privacy. The décor is the previous generation of Residence Inn with red walls and dark cabinets. While the furniture is aging, the room was clean, and the beds were comfortable.

The major drawback to the property is noise from the airport. The hotel is close to the northern edge of the runway. On this particular morning, planes were taking off to the north, and the jet engines were easily heard inside the room. This would not be an ideal spot for light sleepers.

In terms of amenities, Residence Inn includes Wi-Fi and breakfast in the rate. Breakfast featured a variety of hot and cold fare – eggs, sausage, oatmeal, fruit, and yogurt. The Guesthouse was a bit crowded on this Saturday morning, but the main breakfast items were in stock and replenished quickly. Beyond the hotel, there is not much within walking distance except for a good plane watching stop. If you are an airplane aficionado, the end of the runway is a 5-minute walk from the hotel, and there is a nice viewing area for takeoffs or landings depending on the traffic direction. The hotel seems to be located in area where further development was planned but never came into fruition. It is at the end of a street next to a commercial building. There are several fast food restaurants headed west on the main thoroughfare, but it is a stretch to say it is in walking distance. If you are relegated to the hotel for more than a day or so, a car would definitely be in order.

Overall, this hotel would fall in the "probably return" falling short of a more definitive statement due to the aircraft noise.

A little bit outdated. The shower toilet combo was extremely small. The wall were so thin you could hear all movements in other rooms. The service at the front desk was very good and the rooms were very clean. A nice breakfast area and very good WiFi. Plenty of parking with easy access.

In some respects, this hotel meets (but never exceeds) standards for a RI. In other respects, this hotel fails miserably in living up to RI standards. First, hotel rooms seem comparable to other RI inventory. However, configuration of hotel is such that you could be into long walks (or short car trips) to go from room to lobby. Additionally, if it is raining on arrival, be prepared to get wet, along with your luggage, as there do not appear to be connecting hallways from lobby to guest rooms. And moreover, if you are assigned a 2nd level room, be ready willing and able to carry your luggage up a flight of stairs, as there will be no elevator to assist in your transport. Rooms were dated and less than sparkling in cleanliness (I found stray hairs on towels and in sink). Our room had a very strong smell of smoke coming from 1st floor bathroom area. We don’t smoke so I suspect flowing upward from room beneath us. In any event, the smell was so repulsive that we avoided that bathroom area entirely.

Residence Inn Albany Airport, I can’t say enough. This was a pleasant surprise. I have relatives in the local area and that sometimes it is not convenient to stay at their place. This is a reasonable priced alternative for a clean studio apartment, with full kitchen and a free breakfast in the morning. The property is very clean, well maintained and very very reasonable. The facility is well used and at times could use some maintenance. If you mention a maintenance possibility the staff is on it immediately. The pool and the patio sitting area are great selling features in the summer months. We come here annually and have decided this is to be our second home. The staff here is extremely anxious to make sure you enjoy your stay.
