My husband and friends of ours came to Beardslee castle last Saturday night. We had 6:30 reservations for the four of us in the Dungeon. I have seen some reviews here stating that you shouldn't eat in the dungeon area because it is too noisy, but I disagree. It was great. We got to the castle early so that we can sit at the dungeon bar and try 1 or 2 of the over 120 beers that they have available. (They also have drink specials and a full bar). The bartender was very nice and offered to give us some free samples of several beers that were on tap. This was great and we did order a few rounds of some of the beers that she recommended. While we were waiting for our reservation, we played pool and walked around the dungeon area. It was all heavy stone work - a very cool ambiance for sure. Our table was ready early and we had a fantastic site in a semi-circle booth that looked like it was located in a small turret. We ordered appetizers (wings which were spicy but super meaty and cooked perfectly). You can order from the main dining room menu or the dungeon pub menu. If I recall correctly, we all ordered from the pub menu and had hamburgers or chicken sandwiches which were perfectly fine with no complaints. We had a great time here and would like to come back for one of their murder mystery dinners.

We have been wanting to go here since I first saw a picture of it years ago . We finally took a trip to NY so we made reservations for dinner here as soon as I bought my airline tickets. The outside of the castle was very nice from the front. We took lots of pictures. It is just as a beautiful as I thought it was. But as we went to go to the side entrance it was not very nice. It needs a lot of TLC. Sad to see such a beautify place be so neglected. When we got inside it was so smoky from the fireplace our eyes were burning. I guess they just started the fire and a lot of smoke filled the entire restaurant. We went down stairs to the bar to have a drink and to see what it was like. Not at all impressed. It looked like a hole in the wall dirty old bar that nobody cares to keep up. It was very disapointing. The bar tender was not very friendly and the entire bar area and the two others small rooms were also a mess. Nothing went together . The pool table area was real bad also. We went back up stairs as soon as we were done with our drink. We were seated in an pretty empty room with two other smaller tables and an old piano that looks like it was just being stored in there like the stuff in the bar. The pictures in the entire place do not go. I guess they are local artists pictures for sale. They just looked out of place for a castle The service was extreamly slow and terrible. The only thing we had to drink until the waitress finally came around was nasty surfer water that smelled aweful. If you wanted good water you had to pay for a plastic bottle of water. It was pretty funny . We got a laugh out of it. Seariousle !? It seemed like forever sitting in the smoke filled room until we got our food and then when we did everyone’s was cold and not very good at all. None of us ate much of it . I have no idea how people could leave such good reviews. It was very misleading. If we knew how it really was we would have just stopped by and took pictures. The food was also Way over prices for what you get for sure. It was more like a beutiful neglected-castle being used as a local bar.

Not sure how to respond. I'll let the many great reviews and our 28,000 or so facebook likes speak for themselves. The pictures you see on our facebook and our site (or just google Beardslee Castle) also speak for themselves. We currently feature 3 acclaimed local artists works. When we added local art it was met with great enthusiasm and adds a great pop of color. I'm not sure what is 'in place' for a castle, musty tapestries and suits of armor? The beautiful little room you sat in has an equally beautiful 1937 gloss black grand piano in it. It's in nearly new condition which is astounding for it's age. I apologize if it was smoky when you arrived. On rare occasions during the 'fireplace season' the smoke will enter the dining room, only if the flames are very low. Kitchen exhaust fans can weaken the downdraft that comes from an otherwise hot fire. However the same fans work very well in removing the smoke almost immediately when we crack the front door open, which also happens almost immediately as most of our waitstaff have been here for many years and know how to deal with the problem when it (rarely) arises. By the time you were so weirded out by ambiance factors I'm disappointed but not surprised that you should find fault in everything else as well, so it goes with being a destination restaurant, we can please 99% but not everyone. So I would love if you try us again but thanks for taking the time to comment.

The staff here was amazing. When I contacted them about a 25th anniversary dinner and be surprised about renewal they help me by providing a list of officiants.

Since the weather cooperated, we renewed our Vows in front of the lovely fountain.

We walked on the wild side and ordered gator cakes... DELISH!

Beautiful experience and top notch food.

Because we had never been there, we thought that the best way to visit the restaurant was to make a reservation in the dungeon. This was our big mistake. Basically, we were blown away by the nasty bar music and crowds of people milling about. The wine list is very nice with numerous sparkling, red and white wines from which to choose. Although the dungeon menu is nice, we ended up choosing our selections from the upstairs menu. The food was very well prepared. The service was a bit spotty, with different individuals serving us. Unless you enjoy loud rock music and people walking by your table, it would make sense to eat in the main dining room. We will, next time we go there.

Thanks for taking the time to comment and we appreciate the decent rating despite your concerns. During dinner hours (at least until 9pm) the music in the Dungeon is kept to a level where you can hear it (you can identify the song) but just up to that point. I'm not sure if you sat at the bar (where it would seem louder) but the two other dining rooms downstairs don't have speakers in them. Our bar staff works as a team so it's not unusual for more than one person to serve you. It can appear odd if you are used to having 'your' server. I'm wondering if you were here on the night of a dinner theater event? The shows start at 7pm and sometimes the bar can fill up with people catching a pre-show drink between about 6:15 and 7:00. This can sometimes lead to louder music at that time as well. We look forward to seeing you again. You would probably prefer the main dining room, ask for a seat in one of the front rooms. thanks for commenting!

Four of us went to the Murder Mystery Dinner in August. What a hoot. We had a wonderful time. Sat at a table with two other couples. The food was served family style and plenty of it. The show was great - we never guessed "who done it". Lovely building and grounds.
