Years ago we starting to go to Indian restaurants as they were never crowded and no reservations needed. Went to India House on Mother's Day today and this place was busy. Reason? Good food an very nice menu. Friendliness is not a strong suit but overlooked ad food was very good.
I'm always looking for a good Indian restaurant when I travel and I found one in Syracuse, India House Restaurant. Today I had a great lunch of matter paneer, naan, mango lassi, and a complementary bean side dish and rice. All were well-prepared and tasty. As I think about it, that probably was the best Naan I've ever had. The service also was excellent Oh, I've been on my quest since around 1970.
Visited on a Sunday and enjoyed a bountiful buffet filled with several authentic Indian dishes. In addition the salad and dessert bars were very good too. Staff makes you feel warm and welcome.
On a quiet weeknight evening we made the drive from the other side of town to enjoy the fresh flavors at India House. We were greeted warmly and seated in the small but cozy dining area, made charming with thoughtful small touches such as immaculate tablecloths and flowers on each table. After placing our orders, the aroma of cooking food became intoxicating and we agreed that the wonderful smells were part of the enjoyment.
On expressing a preference for water as a beverage, we were supplied immediately with a large pitcher of it with plenty of ice, a convenience we deeply appreciated.
We began with aloo chaat, a delicious sort of potato salad bursting with fresh crunch and flavor. We fought over the last bite! Chicken shahi khorma and tikka masala were both pure delight, with tender morsels of meat bathed in delectable iterations of these classic sauces. Paratha bread, warm and lightly butter-glazed, was the perfect vehicle for delivering more sauce to our eager mouths.
Having eaten my fill, I hated to waste even a few spoons of khorma so asked that it be boxed; our host instead had the cook actually prepare enough of a helping for me to have lunch the next day! To say that I was thrilled is an understatement. We clearly need to visit again as I regretted not trying more offerings.
Do not be fooled by the unpretentious exterior of this little jewel box of a restaurant. There are big flavors in this small space, and the food is worth a drive. Come with a good appetite and a sense of adventure, you will not be disappointed.
