“nice place, good service”

Jackson's Old Chatham House
Price range: US$9 - US$30

we stopped by for lunch on our way home from Massachusetts. the service and food were both very good. but i thought it was a bit pricey for a bar. Its a neighborhood bar with that feel to it, and the prices are what you would expect of a much more upscale place.

Dined here with my cousin; it is their favorite in the area, and we can see why. Excellent service, charming atmosphere, and no hassle with our service dog. Parking is outside right along a major road, so be careful getting out of your car.

Jackson's is a combination of tavern/sports bar in the front and "wait to be seated" restaurant in the rear. We arrived LATE on Saturday evening around 8:45 pm! and were the last diners in the restaurant. We listened to the final couple songs of the white-bearded piano man and watched as he packed and rolled his speakers, piano and tip jar past our table. It took some time to process the check (don't you hate it?) as the wait staff was busy with silverware (the sound is distinct in an empty room), trips to the kitchen, etc. I half-expected to hear the vacuum as it must have been 9:25 pm! and everyone had that "I'm anxious to get out of here" look. With no one in the restaurant, it was easy to be distracted by a young woman making loud, crude (comical?) remarks about body parts at a table of young people in the tavern. Fittingly, they sat nearby the bathrooms where, unfortunately, the men's room had the smell of a tavern bathroom, not a restaurant. This is one of those times where it is best to use a paper towel to touch the door after drying your hands. Do the food preparers use this bathroom too?

The food was very good and reasonably priced. We especially enjoyed the bacon wrapped chicken. Portions were ample. The waitress was pleasant and helpful, though as noted, disappeared at the end. Old Chatham is the weekend home of large numbers of affluent! NYC residents who must be amused by a restaurant that packs up after 9 pm.

Go for the food, go for the price, go to be loud and boozy in the front, arrive well before closing time. Don't expect fine dining.

Thank Steven T

Didn't something so good could be hidden away in this quaint little spot. Food was excellent. Appropriate mussic on Sat evening. (If you go at mid day ask to be seated in the dining room.
