Wellesley - A Wealth of Cuteness

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 5 Jul 2021via mobile
My husband and I (68 & 65) visited here on a road trip from Pennsylvania. (Our first road trip since the pandemic hit). We stayed in Clayton, then came here for one night in June because the place in Clayton was all booked up on Friday night. You take the TI Bridge over from Alexandria Bay for $3.25. The island is 8 miles long. The hotel is old, creaky and cute. We had the St. Lawrence Suite (2nd floor - no elevator) with a queen bed in one room and a twin bed in the other room - so lots of room for the two of us. The restaurant was not opened, but across the street was The Guzzle, and also across the street is where you check in. There is a code on the front door to enter the hotel. There are huge wrap-a-round porches with green rocking chairs, and you can see the River from some of them. Loved sitting there when it rained. Since there was only a few suites - we didn’t see a lot of people inside. BUT, we rented a golf cart from the guy next door in the White House (no signs saying he rents them ) for $55/day. We had so much fun driving around with the cart in this cute town with its Victorian houses from the Methodist camp days. Would be nice to stay at least two days here. This place feels like the days of yesteryear when everyone knew every one in town. Very safe place.

We booked this a few weeks ago and were happy to be able to get rooms near the other families we were with. It is a beautiful old hotel. We wore masks in the common areas downstairs but the upstairs hall is so wide we could maintain distance and were able to keep with our group easily. There is a 2nd story porch that all can access which was perfect for eating breakfast before getting started for the day.

The rooms were nice and clean. Remember it is an older hotel so the shower was small but clean and worked well. The rooms must have been updated some since some of the previous reviews because all our rooms (4 suites / 3 families) were very nice. There is no air conditioning but even in 85-90F weather it wasn’t bad with the ceiling fans and breeze. We had brought a fan anyways which cooled it even more. Malinda the housekeeper was especially helpful and nice. So was the security person who had our keys when we checked in.

Our suite - South Bay - had a queen bed in the first room, adjoined to a room with a twin bed, then came the bath, then a third room with a twin bed. Another suite - Goose Bay - had a large walk in area, a bath, and two double beds. There were other configurations which suited the various groups. (We had 5 adults, 5 teens, two tweens, and a toddler).

There is a restaurant downstairs that does take out (you can eat out on the downstairs porch). They have pastries for breakfast, and have pizza, wings, paninis, salad, and a variety of drinks. The formal / fancy restaurant was not in operation - perhaps due to the pandemic restrictions.

The hotel is a very short walk from the pier where we went fishing and swimming and rented kayaks. It is also a short drive to Alexandria Bay (about 20 min) where we spent a nice day shopping and went on a boat tour (Uncle Sam’s Boat tours).

Most people were wearing masks, and staff in all the shops and restaurants were wearing masks. In all, it was a relaxing and beautiful vacation. I would highly recommend the Wellesley Hotel.

This travel-loving threesome LOVED, LOVED, LOVED Thousand Island Park! We did NOT stay at the Wellesley Hotel but did have dinner at the Wellesly Hotel Restaurant our last night at this magical island and meh! Between the three of us, we ordered the Bucatini Carbonara, Wellesley Hotel Burger, and the Chicken Piccata. The Bucatini was good, the Burger okay but the Chicken Piccata...I make a better Chicken Piccata. The hard part is with not being WOWED, it is hard to want to give this restaurant another try. We are fine with spending our hard-earned money for a meal, but for goodness sake, WOW us! There are many options in Clayton and that is what we did earlier in the week. At the Wellesley, we sat at on the porch and that was lovely. Our service was on the slloowww side and being a former server, I am very attentive to these things. All in all, after reading reviews from others regarding their stay at the hotel, we will keep with other sites for vacation rentals but definitely will be returning to TIP.

Having stayed here previously,,we made reservations whilst at the hotel one year ago for 2019 summer.Reservation was confirmed via email but when we called two weeks prior, we were told quite rudely that under new management there was no booking for us.All efforts at our pleading fell on deaf ears and we were told that nothing could be done about it,This type of attitude is truly shocking and unprofessional,,especially in the hospitality sector.
We are totally disappointed with the staff of Wellesley Hotel for dumping us and our plans for the summer of2019 and hope people do not patronize such places who are so disorganized and rude to their customers.

Room tip: Don't go by photos, some rooms are very poor.

So sorry to hear your experience was less than satisfactory in this situation. Although reservations made prior to 2019 were no longer accessible due to unforeseeable management changes, we wished we had availability to accommodate your stay regardless. It was our hope that by offering to assist in coordinating a cottage rental your stay in the islands could be accommodated. We hope to see you in the near future during your next island retreat.

My husband, who’s family owned a home just down the street from the hotel, spending all his childhood summers there, and I, came to spend a few days at the hotel expecting all of the good things offered in the hotel description. We were quite surprised to find that quaint in this case equals primitive in that the rooms are very sparsely furnished with a bed, two hard back kitchen like chairs and a dresser. The only 2 pillows on the bed were in decorative shams and when I asked the restaurant manager ( the only person at the desk off and on the entire time) for extra pillows he was directed through a phone call to corporate to tell us to take the pillows out of the shams. We had to take toilet paper from a lobby bathroom because there was only an almost empty roll in our room. They offer room service but I don’t know how they manage that as there are no phones in the rooms and at least on this weekend finding someone at the desk was spotty. They say they offer free breakfast but that turned out to be a Kuerig coffee maker set up in the upstairs hallway with a selection of juices in a mini fridge and a plate of mini muffins. While all of this is certainly not what we expected from the advertising the worst was not being told about a key pad for the main door or being given that key code. We had been coming in and out through a screen door(and didn’t even know there was a keypad) until we came back from breakfast across the street on Sunday morning to find we were totally locked out of the building. There is no one on site until the restaurant opens and there was no one in security when we looked for someone there. It was pouring down rain and we had no recourse but to call the number on the hotel website for corporate which I did getting a recording both times. My calls were NEVER returned. Eventually after some time, we were able to find another person staying there who was given the code and we finally got in. We were scheduled to stay another night but we checked out when the restaurant people came in that afternoon. If there is anything nice to say about this experience it would be that the upstairs porch was pleasant, even in the rain but that might be because it offered the only comfortable seating.
Also, Jamie, who runs the restaurant, when he was there, did his absolute best to help us as these problems arose. Bottom line, it is not what is advertised, there is no one on site to deal with problems on weekends, they say they have security but we couldn’t find any evidence of that and something we were really looking forward to was a very disappointing experience.

My husband and I along with our 16 year old granddaughter recently spent two nights at the Wellesley Hotel. When booking there was little to go on as far the rooms as no room photos were available. Loving historic hotels and buildings I took a chance and booked two nights. I should note that my husband and I are no strangers to older buildings as our own home, where we have lived for over forty years is over 100 years old. We expect quirky but not neglect. So let me start by saying what I thought was good. The downstairs lobby, bar area, dining room, porches and exterior were obviously well cared for and presented nicely. Dinner here gets good reviews, although pricey. Breakfast is provided across the street (via vouchers) and was good. Even the upstairs hall was fine and is where there are numerous little shops as well as the guest rooms. Since the shops close early, 3 p.m. I believe, we never got to check them out. Our problem was the room we booked. If I had not met several guests the next morning as we were leaving I would have assumed all rooms were similar to ours as far as condition etc. Not true! Both of the guests I met were pleased with their rooms and offered to show me. (They had the St. Lawrence Suite and Room #3, both of which faced the St. Lawrence and overlooked the upstairs porch.)What a surprise! I would have been happy as well. When I showed them our room, ( South Bay)they immediately understood why I was not happy. First, we had two rooms, one with a double bed and one with a single for our granddaughter. Our room had a ceiling fan, hers did not. Our windows which overlooked the back roof and kitchen exhaust fans had no blinds, were dirty and cobwebbed, and had wooden sticks to hold the window up, which was okay, but were so short the entire window couldn’t be raised. We used the trash can with the stick to fully open the window as the room was hot. We also bought a fan for our granddaughter’s room when we went out later. The bathroom had a psychedelic paint job....panels of bright green, lavender, I think....a rusting shower stall and a window with no blinds. I kept finding small insects in my soap dish in the morning. Nothing on the walls, simple curtains hung at the two bedroom windows with no tie backs so you could let the air in. This was not a bargain room and was the same price as the St Lawrence Suite across the hall that had: dust ruffles on the beds, blinds in the bathroom, a new fiberglass shower stall, a vanity sink, cleaned windows, tie backs for curtains, cute baseball bats to hold the windows up, pictures on the walls and fans in both rooms. The room presented very differently....clean, and care taken to make it homey. The room down the hall was similar but without the new shower and vanity. Also the second room had no bed but was more of a sitting room. Obviously, our room had not been redone as the others had, but yet the owners continued to book it without putting just a little effort in to make it more pleasant. Paint is cheap as are a few pictures, bed ruffle, ceiling fan and a coat of paint in the bathroom and a cheap blind. There was no excuse for not caring enough to take a day and fix up that suite. I should add that another issue was finding someone at the desk. On our last day I had to go into the kitchen as I wanted to check out and report that we were missing a second pillow (very odd) after our room was made up on our second day. Maybe they were short a pillow?? And also to express my disappointment in our room after seeing the other two rooms. The staff were friendly so I have no complaints there and obviously the condition of the rooms is the responsibility of the owners.
So, book with care and I would suggest the St Lawrence Suite. Also, to do again, I would only book one night on the island as there doesn’t seem much to do there (we did enjoy riding around the town to see the quaint Victorian homes) unless you are into water sports etc.
