We'd heard the food was good (and it was) - but service was serendipity #1. Like the pairing of food & wine, the service at Hazelnut Kitchen is perfectly matched to the menu & decor... professional but not fussy, it "ups the game" in just the right way.
Food-wise, cucumber gazpacho exploded on the palate when introduced to a very satisfying sparkling burgundy. Both the grilled stone fruit with jonah crab and the blueberry salad were winners for the lighter eaters - but the "Let the kitchen decide" entree (you're not told what it is) was serendipity #2.
The mystery resolved itself as a braised duck leg on a bed of sweet corn, sauced beautifully and topped with salsa Verde. The duck was both tender and crisp, and the flavors did that amazing thing where they marry to create a taste that exceeds the sum of it's parts, yet remain distinct. It didn't hurt that our server's suggested wine pairing (a moderately priced Cotes du Rhone) was "spot on", either!
Serendipity #3 was very reasonably priced house made ice cream in addition to interesting and delicious offerings like blueberry affogado.
All things considered, an excellent and unexpectedly satisfying dining experience that we look forward eagerly to repeating!
