Thanks Alistair and Harriette for a wonderful stargazing evening. A beautiful evening with no clouds allowed Alistair to introduce us to the Southern Sky. The southern cross, Jupiter and the "jewel box" were seen in all their glory. The four of us Canadians had a truly memorable experience; one which we would highly recommend to visitors to this beautiful region of NZ. Alistair's passion for his hobby was apparent and Harriette's kindness and warm drinks made the evening complete!

Alistair and Harriette made us so welcome and comfortable. The B&B is conveniently located, yet sufficiently far from the village for lights not to interfere with Alistair's engaging and humorous presentation of the interesting objects in the night sky. His large telescope gave us impressive views of Jupiter and its moons, as well as new stars being formed.
Harriette's home made delights greeted us at breakfast, which was a delight. We wholeheartedly recommend a stay here.

This is MUST stay must experience B&B. It was unfortunate that the skies were covered with clouds the night we were there, but the family was invited to a night of entertainment and education from Alastair. Possessing a wealth of information on astronomy and geology, Alastair captivated our attention for more than an hour as he took us along a journey through the stars. My 11 yr old was fascinated by what he saw and heard.

The rooms were sparkling clean, and very comfortable. The bathrooms were luxurious! The kids were soooo happy to see a telly in their room!

Alastair and Harriette were the perfect hosts as well. We had a lovely breakfast in a beautiful dining area. They are such an interesting and intriguing couple, I regret not staying there longer.

Many thanks Mi Mei for the kind review. We're glad the boys also enjoyed the stay and the stargazing tour even if conditions were not ideal on the night...it was certainly quite a different experience for them from back home in Singapore!

We stayed at this B&B for two night whilst touring New Zealand. What a find! You can either stay in the main house or in an old miners cottage in the grounds (which we did). It was clean, well furnished and used the natural materials found in the grounds, including rain water to wash in. The doors and wood used inside the cottage were all from the trees around the grounds! It is a little difficult to find but well worth the effort. The hosts, Alastair and Harriette are the most charming of hosts that I have ever come across. Friendly, informative and incredibly helpful. We enjoyed Alastair's guided tour of the night sky, first he explained the key stars and planets with the naked eye and the we were treated to a view of these using his own telescope. Not only did he entertain us with his knowledge of the stars but he also explained and showed us some interesting geological artifacts. This place is excellently located, just right for visiting the local area which the hosts will tell you all about and make recommendations to help you decide where to visit. They even lent us maps and a spade for using down at the Hot Water Beach, go on try it! I can not recommend this place enough, we shall certainly be visiting again! Thank you to such excellent hosts!

Room Tip: Try Luke's Kitchen in the village close by, this is a real experience, first class food but in a very different environment. Totally relaxed, very informal and the Chef, who is sometimes called Luigi and on other occasions Christian, it just depends how he feels!

The accommodation was unbelievably good and the star gazing evening was brilliant. Being amateur astronomy geeks from the UK we wanted to see the southern night skies; Alastair showed us what we hoped for and more. The cottage was peaceful, secluded, clean and luxurious and Harriet and Alastair made us feel really welcome. Our only regret was that we couldn't stay longer and we definitely hope to go back again. Watching the sun rise whilst sat on the verandah the morning after the star gazing was amazing.
Advice as to local eateries was spot on.

Room Tip: The cottage had been recently refurbished, modernised and turned into a luxurious place to stay just before we visited.
