Alastair and Harriette Brickell offer sublime comfort in a remarkably beautiful setting. Their extraordinary house, built from timber planted and harvested on site by themselves, is a work of art. Our room (actually you get a sitting room as well) looked out over a private deck to the wild hillsides and we breakfasted to the sound of birds and cicadas. It was a glorious stay and we truly hope to return one day. Thank you.

HI Poppy,
Many thanks for your kind review...glad you enjoyed staying in the Observatory Lodge. The outside deck is a great space to enjoy your breakfast...far from the noise of city traffic! We certainly hope you two will be able to visit us once again before too long.

We love the Coromandel coast and Stargazers looked interesting and it was! We were in the miners cottage (with all mod cons) and it was great to be in our own space for a few days. When you're touring with suitcases for a few weeks it's a treat to be left alone to be untidy, empty out the cases and pop to the local laundrette to refresh your stuff. The beach walks around here are the best in New Zealand I think and wildlife abounds. With Whitianga not too far away for shopping, restaurants, etc and picturesque bays around every corner, it's a great part of the world. Alistair is extremely knowledgable and his astronomy tour was intriguing, wide ranging and certainly worth doing ( good for children too). Harriet gave us wonderful breakfasts at their beautiful house where they also have guests. Be aware that driving to Whitianga for dinner is probably not a good idea if you're drinking but Luke's Kitchen in the nearby village is great. Don't forget to get the local insect repellant from the village shop to ward off the occasional bug if you're outside in the evening. Thank you Harriet and Alistair for all your kindness and good humour and I hope we'll be back!

Hi Sandy and Alan,

Many thanks for taking the time to do such a nice review for us. You mentioned you liked having the chance to be a bit untidy when sorting out your things; but you'd never know it after you left...the place was spotless! So thank you for that too!

Glad you enjoyed your time with here and you did manage to see lots of local attractions...as you know, there's a great deal to do and see in our area.

If I were to start by saying this place was awesome and amazing beyond doubt, it would make this review cheesy and useless. However what I can tell you is this is the best Bed and Breakfast place I have ever visited to date. The day we arrived (which involved a 3 hour journey on winding roads from Auckland), we were greeted by a massive complex atop a steep hill (which is not that bad to drive up once you have travelled the infamous winding roads of New Zealand's country). There we were warmly greeted by Alastair and Harriette. What followed was an enjoyable, exciting and thrilling time in coromandel as our hosts recommended and booked the best attractions around this beautiful area. In addition to this sightseeing, we had the privilege of a complimentary star gazing tour, which was indeed incredible. Alastair truly knew his stuff in his so called "hobby" in astronomy boasting a massive telescope, planetarium and an unusual yet fascinating collection of meteorites, rocks and trinkets. We were lucky to have a clear night of stargazing seeing amazing astronomical things like the orion nebula, Uranus and the international space station. Furthermore, the Breakfast was yummy, with homemade fruit salad, jams and yummy yoghurt to name a few items on the menu. We were even given breakfast on our leaving date (where we left at around 4:50 am), but both Alastair and Harriette were awake to serve us which was awesome service. The complex was very clean and nice, being offered a personal sitting room as well as sleeping quarters. The property also has a lot of wildlife with birds happily flying and running around and how could I forget about the "guard" cows who would wonder near the entrance seemingly threatening us moving the car when all they wanted were Alastair's orange peels! Well to end this novel of a review, I would take this opportunity of thanking the host for a wonderful stay and I would recommend this place to anyone who wants to see the wonders of the Coromandel peninsula.

Hi Joshua,

Many thanks for your kind comments. We're glad you enjoyed your stay with us and glad you enjoyed the stargazing tour...you certainly had a very good clear night. Hope you enjoyed your rather early breakfast and didn't find the roads too windy so early in the morning! Please give our regards to Kiran too.

Cheers,
Alastair

Does your host take you on an informative astronomy tour? Does your accommodation give you a luxury suite with bedroom, lounge, kitchenette and outdoor deck? Is your accommodation in a new purpose built home nestled in native woods? Is your breakfast orange juice freshly squeezed from oranges grown in the garden? Is your host friendly, informative and erudite. If your answer to all of these is yes and they all apply to the same place then you must be staying at Stargazers.
This place is truly unique, I can't thank Alastair enough for making this such a memorable stay and a special thanks o Paul Carberry for finding it for us.

Hi Ashley,

Many thanks for your kind review. I'm glad you and Jennifer enjoyed your stay...you were sensible to plan three nights here so you could maximize your chance of good conditions for the complimentary astronomy tour. You certainly made the most of your time in our area and managed to see many of the unique attractions that this part of the world has to offer including the narrow gauge railway, Waterworks Park, boat trips, local quirky restaurants, great scenic drives and let's not forget the pigs! Enjoy the rest of your time in NZ.

We stayed here for a touch of luxury on our 7 week tour of New Zealand in a camper van. We had the old mining cottage set in its own garden. It's an amazing place in a beautiful setting. The hosts have made it a truely unique experience with the stargazing activity. If you are passing by this way, this is an absolute must stay venue. Highly recomended and momorable. Andy & Nicola
