Constitution Island played a significant role in the American Revolutionary War. George Washington put a chain across the Hudson River to prevent the British from sailing up to Albany. The chain was anchored on the west side at what is now West Point and anchored on the east side of the river by what is now called Constitution Island.
Washington placed cannon on both sides of the river. Should a British ship sail north, they would be caught by the chain and fired upon by the cannons.
Exploring the island is great fun.
