“Beautiful History”

Constitution Island
Reviewed 21 January 2017

The views from both the ferry & "island" were lovely. We went with a school group of mixed age students - from 1st through 12th grade. We had a wonderful tour guide who kept all the children (& adults!) interested. The house was fascinating. I enjoyed seeing the kitchen as well as the (chinese?) translation of "Jesus Loves Me", (The song was written by the home owner's daughter.) I don't know if people can visit the without a tour, but I was very happy we went with one. Do wear sensible shoes! I was also glad we had put on sunscreen as we were standing & waiting for the ferry.

What a wonderful time spent with my 15-year-old son. The scenery was just beautiful this time a year. The leaves were at their peak.

Nice boat ride over. Not much to see, but nice to have visited the island. Nice walk. Make sure to show up for your departure time early.

Constitution Island played a significant role in the American Revolutionary War. George Washington put a chain across the Hudson River to prevent the British from sailing up to Albany. The chain was anchored on the west side at what is now West Point and anchored on the east side of the river by what is now called Constitution Island.

Washington placed cannon on both sides of the river. Should a British ship sail north, they would be caught by the chain and fired upon by the cannons.

Exploring the island is great fun.
