Usually I trust and agree with TripAdvisor reviews and use them as a guide to selecting a property. However, I strongly disagree with the 5-star rating of this property. It disturbs me to write a strongly negative review. But when I feel like the experiences of other travelers could be affected, it's important to be honest.

My husband and I rented a River Cabin (Maple, #6), based on the cute online photos and favorable reviews. However, the cabin had such a strong musty odor that we could not breathe inside. We tried to air out the cabin, but nothing worked,. Our first night, we cranked the window AC unit in the bedroom, which did nothing to clear the moldy smell. The window unit was so noisy that we could not sleep. There was also a problem with the drive to the Maple Cabin on a gravel road with hairpin turns and tight switchbacks. We did not have a four-wheel drive, and the ride up to the cabin was downright scary. We did not go out that night, because we did not feel comfortable making it back safely to that cabin in the dark.

The next day, we spoke to the management, requesting another accommodation, preferably a cabin closer to town. There was only one option available, River Cabin #3, which was at the bottom of the gravel road. While this cabin was more accessible, it, too, had a dank, unpleasant smell. We saw traces of what appeared to be mold in the bathroom — black discoloration in back of the toilet, alongside the floor, and by the bathtub (shown in photos). We stayed in this cabin because there was nowhere else on the property to go, even thought it felt unhealthy to be breathing this air for three days.

On a positive note, the management did seem to be understanding and tried to be helpful. However, based on our experience in two different River Cabins with an unacceptable air quality , we honestly could not recommend this property to others.

Room tip: Avoid the River Cabins at all CostS

Cabin was nice, but dated. Be careful of description. WiFi was not available at our location despite promises. Staff was unable to resolve. Liked that we were off the beaten trail. But the price was exorbitant. Won’t be back. Try alternatives.

The cabin was perfect! It was so nice and private but so close to everything at the same time. We would stay there again, for sure. The only thing I could possibly complain about was we wished we had our own firepit at our cabin. We were at the top of the hill and walked down to use the public firepit, which is perfect! We noticed a few others had firepits of their own. It truly was perfect!

We had a really great two night stay at this immaculately kept hotel. Our room was clean, cosy and quiet with rocking chairs on the porch and we really appreciated the complimentary home baked cookies and great selection of coffees and teas. Very centrally located in Blowing Rock and a few minutes walk to a nice range of local shops and numerous dining options. A special mention for the very helpful lady on reception who made two tired travellers on the Blue Ridge Parkway from the UK feel so welcome plus her dining recommendations. We had great meals at the Speckled Trout and take away pizza from the Mellow Mushroom and loved every minute of our stay.

Been going to Mountainaire Inn for 8 years. Last year Jim and Debbie sold it and just hasn’t been the same. The only person who makes you feel welcome is the long time employee, Kaitlyn. No one else even says good morning. Rooms are clean, bed was so squeaky and sunk in middle that we had to have them turn over the mattress. Love the Blowing Rock location, but the lack of charm and customer care will keep us from going back.

We want to thank you for taking the time to provide feedback about your stay. The satisfaction and comfort of our guests is a top priority for us, and so we do sincerely apologize for missing the mark on your latest experience.

Although our boutique hotel is under new ownership as of September 2021, we have not had any significant changes to our team since the transition. Our entire team shares a wholehearted commitment to providing the same attention to guest service that you have always received over the years.

To enhance the guest experience further, we are proud to be introducing new services and amenities to the property, including a recently announced bed & breakfast package option that provides a daily High Country breakfast buffet and access to an indoor swimming pool and fitness center at our sister property steps away. We are also in the process of implementing a handful of property upgrades including the installation of new, larger televisions to guest rooms.

We greatly value your review and do hope that you will give us another chance for your next stay in Blowing Rock.
