FEMA Took Our Room - But Hotel Did Us Right

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 23 Sept 2019
I don't normally write reviews, but I had to write one for the Residence Inn. We were scheduled to stay at the Residence Inn for family weekend in September. Upon arriving in Chapel Hill, I got an email saying that our room was, unfortunately not available and they were going to relocate my family 20 minutes away from Chapel Hill at another hotel (and pick up the cost for the weekend). (FEMA overstayed their initial reservation last minute - which can't be helped I suppose but also is not my issue and I should not pick up the cost or inconvenience for this.) This was obviously a nice gesture but just not going to work for us. Staying 20 minutes away would have totally changed our schedules and our flexibility while visiting our daughter. We only had 2 days with her so being able to quickly get to and from our hotel was a priority. I quickly searched other hotels in Chapel Hill and found one at 2X the price of the Residence Inn - since I was a last-minute reservation. I grabbed it out of necessity. I called the Residence Inn and explained that due to the fact that the FEMA employees stayed later than expected, I would now be incurring a cost double what I would have originally paid for the Residence Inn. Sam, the manager, totally understood and was so understanding. He knew it wasn't right for me to pick up the cost and was generous enough to offer us a free weekend at the Residence Inn for a future weekend. It was so professional. I really appreciated Sam working with me so that I did not end up paying double for the weekend (over time I would recoup my $). This is how a hotel should be run - with such consideration for the customer. I can not say that I ever stayed in this hotel, but with this level of service, I look forward to staying there in the near future. Thank you, Sam and Residence Inn!

Four of us stayed here on business for four nights. The entire staff was helpful at all times. Rooms were comfortable and immaculate. Free printing from the Internet-connected computer near the front desk was appreciated. Special thanks to Stephanie who was beyond hospitable, friendly, accommodating, and professional at all times.

Pretty negative experience.

1) Toilet was clogged upon arrival and had to plunge it myself since there was no maintenance people on site.

2) Mattress smelled like urine and did not have protective covers.

3) flying/biting bugs in room that bit our legs, but killer them myself.

4) Half dollar sized spider on sofa bed.

5) Microwave light was burned out.

6) Sausage at breakfast looked like a meat never seen before.

Good morning Mr.Greer,

Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts regarding these issues. We appreciate you bringing it to our attention. As I mentioned yesterday this is not a typical situation. Since we spoke I brought these issues up to our maintenance and housekeeping supervisors.

We were able to fix the slow draining toilet, it seems the microwave you spoke of was, in fact, working when our team went up. If the door is left open for a while the light will turn off for the guest safety. Upon your request, at the front desk, we do have some night lights for families traveling with children.

Our housekeeping staff is trained to I am so sorry this occurred during your stay last night. As for the breakfast, I will share your feedback with the kitchen supervisor to provide a different choice.

Once again, thank you for your valued feedback and we hope to serve you again whenever your travels bring you back to Chapel Hill in order to restore your confidence in us.

We were in town for a lacrosse tournament. Location was good. The staff and breakfast were great. The property is a bit older and is showing its age, but not in a dirty or scary way. The hotel was a bit loud but that could be largely because half the rooms were holding young lacrosse players.

I think a long stay hotel tends to attract business professionals with longer stays who are quieter than a party event hotel.
I love the kitchen and table for inviting friends over when visiting an area with friends around. It's tough to visit with friends when 2 people have to sit on a bed and no table to play cards. The kitchen was also great so you don't really care about expensive restaurants nearby. We purchased a few deli items and brought them home, then made a couple of simple meals.
The rooms were clean and well appointed.
The furniture and walls were not worn.
The elevator and parking to the right is a bit quirky.
We felt safe.
I enjoyed the breakfast and glad they had warm oatmeal.
Fruit was absent so bring you own.
Nice breakfast area.
We had a great sleep.
It was far enough from the road so no road noise.
It was in the trees so very little other noise.
Very pleasant setting versus hotels in a series of parking lots.
I wouldn't mind staying longer.
We'll stay hear again on on our next trip to the area.
