Nicest Staff, but Not a Pleasant Stay

2.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 20 Aug 2019
I stayed here because it was move-in weekend for the University of Chapel Hill and all the Franklin Street hotels seemed to have jacked up their prices.

Because of construction, it was difficult to find this place, even with Siri's help and a MapQuest printout, but I did finally find it. The young man who checked me in was very friendly, and told me how to get to a nearby shopping plaza on foot.

As for the room ... when I first opened the door there was an odor. I think musky is the word sometimes used, but I always thought that meant opening something that hadn't been opened in a long time. It turned out to be dampness. The air cooling unit below the window did a fine job of keeping the room cool, but it didn't remove the moisture. There was condensation on the exterior of the mini-fridge, the paper in the room was limp, and eventually my clothing felt damp. It felt like it feels when you're in a cave.

As for the walls ... not noise blockers by any means. I could hear every flush that happened in adjoining rooms above and beside me, as well as frequently snippets of conversations and television programs.

There was a bug, but it's the South, so there are going to be bugs.

With the exception of the two long dark hairs in the bathroom, it seemed to be clean. The carpet and furniture looked new. The towels and bed linens were in good shape.

The room was about three times the size of the room I last stayed at in New York. There's a sitting area, desk, wardrobe, bed, and the lavatory is outside the toilet and shower area.

Besides the mini-fridge, there was a microwave, a decent TV with a remote that worked, iron and ironing board, hair dryer and a coffee maker. Getting real and not decaf coffee proved to be a challenge, and there was a lot of back and forth, but it was finally resolved.

I needed to leave early when I checked out so I could catch my flight at RDU. Breakfast was advertised as being available from 6 - 9 a.m., but when I got there at 6:05 a.m. breakfast was not ready. This was just a simple continental breakfast that should have been set up quickly and on time. It wasn't until 6:15 a.m. that the utensils were finally put out, hot coffee was never available, and when I asked the lady who was setting it up for tongs to pick up my toast, she used her hands, which I admit were gloved, to retrieve it for me.

This was not an expensive place, but remember, you get what you pay for.

The hotel rooms face the outside of the facility and if staying on the second floor, be prepared to walk up the steps. The entrance is hidden due to construction so slow down as you look for the sign/entrance or you will pass it.

Room tip: Rooms facing the pool have a better view, but try to book one downstairs.

Our first room had a very dirty rug, obviously not cleaned in a long time, and cobwebs in a corner and just plain skanky. The second room on first glance seemed "ok". Later that night when using the tub, there was hair in there (NOT ours), small curly hairs on the rolled up bath mat (again, NOT ours). In the morning, I noticed strands of long, black hair on the hair dryer (not ours!). Missing wall light and a stained duvet cover. Wished I had inspected the room better.
Just a GROSS place to stay!!

I booked two rooms here for my sons graduation party. The staff was great, and friendly. The rooms were clean and the lady at the front desk was very helpful. The pool was clean and my kids enjoyed it! The breakfast bar was well stocked and the lobby was super clean! It’s the best quality inn that i have ever stayed in! Can’t wait to stay again!

I spent one night at this property and experienced no problems. The location is the worst part- not easy to drive to and the large construction site next door adds some issues. Our room was on the back side of the hotel, and there were large work trucks lined up the entire length of the building. One seemed to be running all night long. The room itself was clean and well equipped. The beds were rather firm, but that to me is an advantage, indicating a relatively new mattress. We had plenty of towels. Check-in was smooth with clear directions for nearby dining when we asked. We were up early and did not go to breakfast. I would definitely stay here again, but request a room on the front side of the hotel.

Thank you for providing your feedback about your recent stay. Our neighborhood does have a lot of construction going on, signs of growth! I do apologize that you had a hard time finding us, we're glad you did! I am also glad to read that you found your room clean with lots of towels. When you come back again just request to be at the front, we will gladly accommodate your request. Until next time, safe travels!
