Let’s start with the bright spots: food, view, and safety. The menu is seafood-focused, with enough other options to provide something for most people. We both ate seafood, which was wonderful, local fare. It was prepared well which is to say minimally, as good, simple ingredients should be. I was very happy that they accommodated several easy but custom requests, for example I order two apps and asked for the catch off the day grilled on a plate with nothing else, and they were happy to accommodate. And we had our meal at a window with what was truly a million dollar view of the sound.
A note on Covid safety - it seems everybody has their own opinion on the topic, and as a North Carolinian who has weathered the pandemic in state, my experience has been that coastal businesses are “ahead of the curve” in relaxing safety protocols. I was happy to find that they maintained good distances between parties, even while this cost capacity.
So why 4 stars instead of 5? I reserve 5 start ratings for truly exceptional restaurants. This was certainly the best restaurant we’ve been to in Hatteras, but that means it’s the best restaurant in Hatteras, not in the world. It’s a beach restaurant that grills fish well, but I would square my home kitchen off against them any day of their week and win at least 6 out of 7 times. This is not the place you come to for menu inspiration. And while I was happy they had live music, Jimmy Buffet covers that I couldn’t really hear 40 feet away is not dinner and a show.
Come here for a solidly good meal at the beach with a great view, but not to change your life.
