Stopped here for lunch and was not disappointed. One gets a lot of food for the price you pay. Service was great. We will be back.

When you walk into Henry’s, it doesn’t appear to be anything special. A typical family-dining establishment, perhaps a bit on the retro side. Don’t let appearances fool you, though. Both the food and the service more than make up for the décor.

We ate here twice, on our recent OBX trip, once for lunch, and again for dinner. And we’d cheerfully go back again.

We’d arrived at mid-day, and picked Henry’s by chance. It had been a long drive, with concerns that Maria was playing tag with the coast. In fact, there was a mandatory evacuation of visitors to the southern islands, and we didn’t know what we’d find, or if we’d even be allowed to enter OBX. We were hungry. And Henry’s looked like a nice-enough place to have lunch before checking into our hotel.

What we found was a great restaurant, with friendly, helpful staff, and good food.
We figured on sandwiches for lunch. They had Friend Wife with the soft shell crab, which was in season. She’s one of those people who would walk barefoot across glass for a well-prepared softie. She smiled the rest of the day, which should tell you how it tasted. I had the crab cake. It was a typical Maryland/Carolina type, but a bit larger than most I’ve eaten. Both choices were accompanied by fries and a pickle. Not fine dining, by any means, but prepared well. Certainly above average. And good value for the price.

For dinner, Friend Wife ordered the trout---a fish she’d not had before. Her first mouthful included several bones, which was unexpected. But I showed her how to avoid them, and she thoroughly enjoyed the rest of her meal. I went with the fried oyster platter. Oysters, when available at all where we live, are expensive, and not the freshest. So I usually order them when we’re on the coast. These were crisp on the outside, soft and creamy on the inside, and, in all ways, superlative.

We didn’t order it, but were intrigued by the create-your-own combination platters offered for both lunch and dinner. This would be a good choice for someone wishing to sample several seafood flavors. It comes in two versions: a 2-choice and a 3-choice, with nine possibilities to choose from, including shrimp, scallops, oysters, clam strips, and even trout and soft crab among them. These platters are accompanied with fries, cole slaw, and hushpuppies.

Henry’s is a full-service restaurant, serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with numerous non-seafood items ranging from hamburgers to prime rib. But, when we’re on the coast, we generally stick to seafood. We can get those other things at home.

All in all, a good choice, particularly for lunch, as it helped us wind down from the tension of the drive. But good enough, too, that we returned for dinner, when all that stress was a thing of the past.

My husband and I dined here during our recent vacation. The booths were comfortable, and the decor is a little retro but that is a good thing. It is clean and comfortable and the food is great. They serve a mini loaf of bread with the meal. We ordered steak and they were done to perfection. I believe our server got handed a large party on the other side of the restaurant but the crew didn't miss a beat, they took care of us while she was attending to the larger party. Our food was tasty and my salad was yummy. Relaxed atmosphere and very homey.

Had breakfast on the advice from a book we read and the TA reviews. I can say it was only ordinary. The service was friendly and quick. The meal was as ordered but the food very average. Would not recommend.
