Great place to stay. Employees were friendly and nice. Our AC went out and they had it replaced within 30 minutes of letting them know. Great access to the beach. We will definitely stay again with them. Next time we want to get the ocean front room.

Stayed here for first time in mid April. We rented a 3 bedroom cottage for us, our daughter and her children. It was clean and right on the ocean. The front desk lady was very nice. We had the best ever vacation with our grandchildren. They loved the playground and the pool. The price was very reasonable for a 3 bedroom with full kitchen. The only downside was the small shower and I'm really reaching here...no TV's in the bedrooms. Are those things a big enough issue to deter us from staying there again? Absolutely not! The good far outweighed any slight negative. We can't wait to go back and will hopefully make it a yearly tradition. I would also love to stay in one of the oceanfront rooms. The porch and rockers looked so inviting. Thank you to The Cavalier for a wonderful stay and for your low rates that make it affordable for people on a tight budget. It meant the world to us!

I realized when booking this hotel, it was an older one. Upon arrival, it could be classified as a dump. The exterior was brick, and the grounds were trashy. The cottage 28 where we were to stay was disgusting. Imitation leather furniture, carpet squares with adhesive in the living room and bedrooms; broken blind slat in one bedroom facing the parking lot, dirty shower stall, bathroom so tiny you could barely fit one person in it, no towel bars, no blow dryer, no iron, no Kleenex. I could go on and on. The owners should either do some updates, or close the place down. The last straw was when we drove in the driveway the wrong way and immediately got a phone call from the front desk reminding us it was a one way driveway. Luckily, we were able to check out that same night and go to the Comfort Inn. Do not stay there!!!

Room tip: Don't book anything there!!

First of all, this guest apparently has no understanding of the vintage old Nags Head-style cottages of the Outer Banks of yesteryear and was looking for a modern style hotel. That said, this reviewer's description is ridiculously inaccurate. We strive to maintain the vintage old-Nags Head cottage style while keeping it well-maintained and providing the modern updates needed for our guests' comfort. No, there are no blow dryers, irons, or Kleenex - these are family beach cottages, not a chain hotel room. We have always maintained high housekeeping standards ( and many, many reviews note this ) and to say that our grounds are trashy is completely absurd. Our friendly, hard-working staff take pride in maintaining a well-kept establishment. Our carpeting is good quality, new, and easily replaceable by sections as it was installed with families and the foot traffic of kids wet, sandy feet and spilled drinks in mind. Since the cottages are both kid and pet-friendly, a broken blind slat may happen once in a while, though we replace them as quickly as possible. Imitation leather furniture? Are they kidding? Again, no concept of a family-friendly vintage Nags Head-style beach cottage. If you are looking for a sterile modern chain hotel or mega-mansion beach house, then by all means go elsewhere. If you are looking for the charm of a clean, comfortable, old-Nags Head style cottage court that welcomes your children and your pets with enough modern amenities to keep you comfortable, then this may be your place! If so, you will find yourself returning year after year, as do hundreds of our regular guests who return generation after generation and consider it their home away from home.

Nice little motel on the beach. We had an ocean view efficiency/Kitchenette. Roomy. Table with 4 chairs, couch, easy chair, 2 queen beds, 2 dressers, full bath, smallish but proper full-size fridge, oven, kitchen sink, microwave, toaster, coffee maker, dishes and such, a couple pots. Only missing a glass quart size thing for microwave cooking. Used a plastic bowl, it worked. The water takes a while to get hot, but be patient, it gets there. The tank must be kind of far away. Almost enough lights. Hotels never have enough light, for me to knit or sew in the evening. This one came close.

Yes, the decor is old. The style of everything is sort of old. But the old fashioned bedspreads were bright and cheerful. The room was clean. The curtains closed all the way. Plenty of linens. The door opens onto a long porch, and the sand is 3 steps down.

Connecting door to the next room.

Bathroom had lots of brilliantly white towels and blue facecloths. Soap, but no shampoo. No counter, full tub. Decent water pressure. Shelves with towels had room for my stuff. Smallish, perfectly serviceable not fancy bathroom.

There are 3 3-4 step &sections of stairs to get from parking to the back porch of the building where the beach side rooms are. I didn’t expect that.

The water ROARED! The surf was really loud! I loved that. It’s the nature of big waves, part of the charm of an ocean side room.

There are a ton of religious pamphlets at the front desk. Creepy. But the people didn’t mention them, it was just a static display.

Playground with boat climbing structure and swing set. Couple of pools I didn’t look at (March, 45-50F). Assigned parking spots. Beach side rooms have a walk, a sensible schlep, to the cars (duh). Can park closer to unload.

Weather station on the lobby chimney connected to weather underground. That was fun.

Fabulous room for an amazingly low price. Definitely recommend.

Room tip: Ocean side rooms have the roar of the surf! The kitchenettes are excellent.

I usually stay at a hotel in kitty hawk that is a bit fancier than the Cavalier. But I was drawn to it by the oceanfront efficiencies that they offer. I checked in as the sun was setting, and was greeted pleasantly by the desk person, and told how and where to park. Parking is assigned, which is good and bad..for the oceanfront cottages, it would have been nicer to be closer to the rooms, but it’s not awful. You can unload your car in the “alley” which has a few stairs (manageable), and then go park. The room was spit and polish clean. No smoking rooms are a requirement for me, since as a former smoker I am sensitive to the smell, and there was no trace of smoke anywhere (they are non smoking rooms). Lamps and electronic appointments were all in working order. The knotty pone paneling was clean and well kept. Furniture was surprisingly comfortable, given that it was the bamboo lounge style. I do wish that a dining table was part of the decor...but with the view who really wants to sit inside? The outside chairs were set up and the porch was tidy. It was a wonderful visit, and I will return again. This is definitely my new home on the banks.
