This was our third stay at The Castle in four years, and a fourth stay is inevitable. The location of The Castle away from the main highway and the uniqueness of the property are just two of the features that draw us back. A rooftop deck and another across the road provide relaxing spots to enjoy the view of the lake, Ocracoke and the sound. Our room, Patti's, was comfortable, but we didn't like it as much as Mary's or Katie's. The bathroom was next to the porch and the hallway leading to the kitchen, and it didn't feel very private to have someone sitting right outside the window while...you get the idea. It didn't have comfortable chairs or good light for reading, however we made good use of the front office and the den, which were comfortable and had better light. The Castle provides free wireless internet access. Breakfasts were outstanding. Every morning there were scrambled eggs, potatoes, bacon, sausage and grits as well as one item that varied from day to day--french toast, pancakes, omelet or biscuits and gravy. For those who prefer a lighter breakfast, there was also cereal, fresh fruit and juice, bagels, coffee and tea. Water, soft drinks and snacks are available all day. Bicycles were readily available this time; combination locks have apparently kept them from disappearing. The Castle is clean and well-maintained and the staff are friendly and helpful.

My wife and I spent 3 nights at the Castle B&B. We were in the Katie room on the second floor. The view out our window was of Silver Lake. The room was spotless. It had enough storage space for our clothing and beachwear. There was a large corner garden tub in the room.

We enjoyed breakfast every morning but we both really liked the French toast and scrambled eggs. Bottles of water, soda, and lemonade were available around the clock.

This B&B has a nice pool for an afternoon dip. There aren't but a few pools on the island. The landing on the fourth floor provided a panoramic view of the area and the island lighthouse.

Bicycles were available free for our use. You could bike to almost everywhere on the island. A short walk put you into the heart of the 'downtown' area.

We enjoyed our afternoon drinks at the Jolly Roger watching a local fisherman clean the catch of the day. The Back Porch served up a great meal for my wife's birthday.

We had to leave the island two days early because of a problem with a bad toothache. The castle gladly refunded our money for those two days. I'm not sure how many other B&B's would have done that.

It is a cool house that has been renovated into a B&B. Our room was on the cheaper side so it was fairly small and the ceilings felt low. The breakfast was good the first day and then progressively got worse for the remaining 3 mornings we were there. I think it was mainly because it was pretty much the same thing every morning and I got pretty sick of it by the end. The location is great and it was nice to have a pool to dip in to. The only problem with the pool was the horse flies. That is an Ocracoke issue you though and not isolated to the pool of the Castle. Overall a nice place to stay. I would like to try another place though next time. The Silver Lake Inn looked nice with balconies overlooking the harbor.

There are eleven rooms in the main house. Actually, the main house is the ONLY place since the outlying condos and apartments have been spun-off to owners. So, the Castle is now a pure B&B. It is situated right on the harbor with a nice dock on which you can watch the boats coming and going. It is an interesting and pretty house. The rooms are spotless, we have stayed in two of them. The rooms have period furniture and very nice. I suppose it could be noisy, as others have suggested but we haven't been bothered. The breakfast is the best we have had at a B&B.

My gripe, if there is any, is price. With tax our bill was $175. Thats steep for out of season. But we are on an island, where everything is more expensive. Am not sure what other places charge but I would bet the Castle is the most expensive place on the island. Anyway, do go to Ocracoke, it is a unique place and stay at the Castle. But bring money.

Castle has alot of charm and character. Walls, floors and ceilings are all wood, no sheetrock anywhere! Altho I was concerned this would make rooms a bit dark, they were very inviting, nicely decorated. Ours had plenty of room for 3, comfortable beds (even the twin was comfy), refrig in room. But, as noted elsewhere, it was VERY noisy. Since floors and ceiling are wood, the sound of footsteps was amplified and the people upstairs went to bed late and got up early -- we heard every step. Also you could hear some noise from common area, which is right outside the room, and from people using ice machine.
The pool area is very nice, and the pool house has sauna and steam room. Unlike many places, the Castle provides plenty of lounge chairs and clean towels at its pool. It was also convenient to have a full breakfast at the Inn, we enjoyed meeting many of the other guests.
We would not stay on the first floor again. Would consider renting a 2nd floor room, depending on price.
We also stayed next door at the Harbor Inn on this trip, which was much less expensive. Room had less character and not as large, but was clean and comfortable and much more quiet (even tho we were on 1st floor).
