Staff were disinterested, had difficulty finding equipment (kayaks, paddles, life jackets), and made comments like "this should work" when getting kayaks. One of the kayaks had a hole under the seat (which they knew about and had tried to patch) resulting in it taking on water so we literally had to walk it back since it wouldn't stay afloat. Awful experience.

Other overpriced stores around with a lot of attitude made me enter the door at Hatteras Island Surf and Sail (the location that is behind the Dairy Queen in Waves).

For three days I had the time of my life!

Low-key attitude, low prices, any type of gear you might want to try and a great shallow area right in front of the door.

Do not let the chaotic look fool you. Soon you will realize this is not chaotic, this is authentic. Barton, please do not change a thing!

You open the door and you enter the realm of "THE Dude". Barton and crew have zero judgement in their eyes, are most sincerely happy to see you there. If you rent with them - fine, if you don't - fine too.

Yes, depending on weather, you can get lessons in SUP, kayaks, kiting, foiling and windsurfing.

Barton has been in this business since the business existed. He knows what you need before you realized it yourself.

Barton's son is probably one of the top-10 kiters in the world ... so that speaks for itself.

I came in stressed out, I left with a smile on my face.

What's there more to say.

The owner, Barton Decker, is one of the most knowledgeable and helpful folks I have encountered on the Outer Banks of North Carolina for windsurfing and kiting. He's always helpful and a blast to talk to. His shop has tons of equipment for sale, as well as lessons and rentals for both sports as well as SUP'ing and surfing. This is a straight-forward good place.
