Without exception, Campobello Island is filled with the world's friendliest people, and you'll get your introduction to this welcoming island with a stay at the Campobello Whale Watch Motel. When I called to book the room earlier this year, the owner Fran filled me in on what we could do on the island and the annual Fogfest celebration that coincided with our trip, which spanned five nights. She even recommended a driving route from Lake George, NY, which is where we would be the night before departing for the island. I felt like we had known each other forever, the conversation was so companionable. This did not stop when we met Fran, her husband Jim, and their son. They greeted us like old friends and appreciated how tired we were from our long drive. The motel is situated in a wooded area next to the main road through the island, but noise and traffic are not a problem. We were up on the second floor as we had requested so our room was carpeted whereas the first floor units had engineered hardwood. The ceiling angled up so the room seemed larger than it already was. We had a table where we could eat or have coffee, plus two queen beds and a night table between the beds. We also had a coffee machine, electric kettle, plates, wine glasses, refrigerator, silverware, and daily replacements of coffee. Fran does make gourmet coffee available in the office each morning, if you would like to partake. At the start of Fogfest, they left us two plastic glasses with "Fogfest" written on them. Thank you! The bathroom was large enough for two and the towels were comfortable. Two chairs are in position outside on the porch overlooking the parking lot, but we did see someone move the chairs to the back to overlook the lawn and woods. Unfortunately, the mosquitoes were on high alert while we were there so we only enjoyed the porch one afternoon. One thing you might want to consider is this is an island and power can go out, as it did twice while we were there. Once it went out overnight and we only realized it around 4 a.m. when we woke to complete darkness, as in the clock and every tiny light was out. (Outside there is a yard light for the parking lot, but the drapes effectively block any light from it.) The second time it happened was when a fishing trawler hit a cable and knocked power out on all the islands in the area. That was for about three hours, with power resuming at 11 p.m. Fran delivered a flashlight to our room, but we had battery operated reading lamps already, so we were good. We did take the opportunity to stargaze, albeit from our screened door because the mosquitoes were ravenous that night. So pack a battery powered light, because you never know on islands what will happen. Don't take a shower either, like I did during the outage because the water suddenly stopped and I had to rinse my hair with bottled water. Live and learn. When you go outside in the morning, look for snowshoe hares. We saw a little guy by himself and grazing with a domestic rabbit. If you book here, you can be guaranteed peaceful nights and friendly people. We slept with our sliding door open every night to catch the natural coolness, but there is an air conditioner in the room. You will find the location is perfect as you are a short drive from everywhere and if you have any questions, you have experts on the island as hosts. The housekeeping staff clearly takes pride in their work because the room was immaculate and we never had to ask for something that housekeeping forgot to do as is wont to happen in larger corporate hotels. Our housekeeper even noticed how we used pillows and placed all the shammed pillows on one bed and fluffed up the pillows we were using on the other instead of having us remove shammed pillows each night. We were really sorry to leave and already know that when we return to Campobello, we will stay here.

Fran and Jim greeted me like a long-lost friend upon checking in. They gave me the scoop on what to see and do on Campobello Island, and the rundown on where to eat. The Motel itself was great - super clean and comfy beds, great touches like a picnic basket with supplies, information about the island, and flower boxes out front. I would definitely recommend this Motel to anyone wanting to visit Campobello, and hope to return some day soon!

Campobello Whale Watch Motel is just what we needed for our adventure in Campobello NB CA. Easy central location, comfortable clean spacious room with 2 queen beds. There’s everything here we need to spend 3 days on the island. Refrigerator, microwave, TV, coffee maker, fan, AC, a hairdryer, a supply of paper plates and plastic utensils, even a picnic basket and beach towels! A deck, outdoor tables and chairs, too. The friendly owners have thought of everything. So glad we found this place!

The owners checked us in and were beyond welcoming. They could be tour guides for their little island. There's so much more to do on this island besides FDR's home, and these folks and tell you all about it. They even gave us print-outs!! The rooms was very comfortable. It's not plush but very adequate. It had all we needed. I would definitely stay here again.

Room tip: No elevator to upper level

Great fresh ground and brewed coffee in the morning! The best I’ve had on our entire two week vacation. The accommodations had everything we needed...AC, queen size beds, fridge, and of course it was clean. There were also plenty of unexpected things to make our stay easier like plates, bowls, silverware, utility towels, and don’t underestimate the value of the perfect cup of coffee in the am! The hosts gave us great tips for making the most of our short time on the island based on our interests. This was not your “luxury” hotel but it certainly had charm and was clean and comfy. We would definitely stay again.
