Right on the beach at Mahahual with an incredible view, beautiful sea for swimming, and a virtually 24-hour 7-12km/ hour breeze to keep you comfortable even when temps are 30+ C (85 F) -- at least in February.
The hotel is small -- no more than 7-8 rooms of which four are seafront. All seaward rooms have a balcony -- small on the third floor, large patio-type on the second with room for two chaise lounges and accoutrements. Room A/C is adequate, but some evenings the sea breeze was so strong we left the door open to enjoy fresh air and the sound of surf. Bathroom is separate from sink which is in bedroom. Plenty of shelf space at sink. Our room was small but comfortable -- the bed was a very comfortable king. I only wish we had a little more room for hanging clothes.
Service was excellent, and best of all is the hostess, Tina, a Brooklyn-born Mahahual resident via Los Angeles. She is a mine of information on everything from best places to eat through pharmacy products (She runs a well-stocked pharmacy right next to the restaurant on the ground floor.) to bus schedules to nearby towns and places worth visiting.
If you're looking to body surf, the Caribbean is not for you. The entire east coast of the Yucatán is rimmed by the world's second-longest coral reef so the surf breaks at least 100m from shore and you can't surf on a coral reef anyway. Try the Pacific, but be aware the water temp is quite cool/cold.
The village of Mahahual is charming. Despite the fact that 2-3 cruise ships dock almost daily at the port 3km (2 miles) from town, not that many passengers make it to the village. The streets are more crowded when ships come in but never anything like elbow-to-elbow. And the place is small: tallest buildings are three stories and the village spreads just a little more than a kilometer along the shore. Cancun it is not, nor does it aim to be. And the seafood! Within a five minute walk are 4-5 excellent restaurants with very reasonable prices. I had no idea the Caribbean's warm waters for lobster and crab, but these waters around the reef have them in abundance.
The beach is beautiful - mostly sand bottom with patches of higher ground covered by vegetation. Inside the reef lagoons the color of azure form. These pools get to be 1.5m (5 feet) deep and one can easily do distance swimming. Water temp is pleasant - about 27-29C (low 80's F).
There is a first floor restaurant where excellent breakfasts and lunches are available for about $4-$5 US.
The final factor that makes this such a value is the very reasonable Caballo Blanco price. Unbelievable for beachfront in North America!
Be aware that 2nd and 3rd floor rooms are not wheelchair accessible.
The only downside is the price you pay to travel to this relatively secluded place: its about 385km (240 miles) from Cancun, nearest major airport. Private transportation is high, given the distance. (Two of us paid $300 US one way.) The ADO bus is a much cheaper option. Its busses are big and comfortable; total travel time is 5+ hours, and the vehicles run directly from the Cancun airport. However, at this time because of schedules you have to take the bus to Tulum, spend the night there and travel to Mahahual the next day.

Thank you Rob for taking the time to write such a wonderful informative review. I would like to add a few things , that I think may help. The ADO bus is available 3 times a day. It's about 20 U.S. per person direct to Mahahual. If the schedule doesn't work for someone, there are ADO busses that run to Chetumal almost every hour, but get off in Limones. In the airport you would take the flyaway bus to Playa del Carmen. It takes you to the ADO bus terminal, on 5th avenue , then transfer to LIMONES. Which is about 35 minutes from us. There you can take a taxi to Mahahual for about 20 dollars at any time. There also is an airport in Chetumal that is 1hour and 15 minutes from us. At the moment it is not international. It will be, we hope, in the next year. Depending on where your traveling from in the states you can connect in Mexico City on Volaris or Interjet to Chetumal, instead of flying into Cancun. Hope that helps and we can see you again!
Happy travels,
Tina

Our second stay. Very nice. Clean quiet and peaceful. Everyone we met was so nice. The bed was extremely comfortable. Enjoyed the evening on the room balcony. The town was small and an enjoyable walk. Great food. We had pizza at Dino's. It was thin and crispy. Really good. Also had an excellent breakfast there at the hotel. Would definitely stay there again!

Quaint hotel on the malicon. Well equipped rooms, that are comfortable and clean. Owner and staff are very accommodating. Beautiful views from our room and the roof top patio. Would definitely stay here if back in the area.

Room Tip: Be sure to insist on paying a deposit so room is held for you.

We stayed here Feb.6- Feb.20. This hotel was perfect. It has magnificent views, especially from the rooftop pool. Watched the sunrises while drinking my coffee from our patio. The staff keeps the hotel very clean and shipshape. Tina (the owner) always made us feel at home and any advice we needed was always spot-on. All in all, it was one of the best vacations I've ever had. Definitely going back next year.

If you want someplace to get away from it all in southeast Quintana Roo the Hotel Caballo Blanco is an excellent choice.
Overlooking a reef protected beach the natural beauty of the coast can be seen for miles in each direction.
The local seafood ,including whole fish estillo maya and Mexican lobster with all the side dishes and condiments of region are within walking distance.
The fare at the hotel includes breakfast and lunch service ,with a full bar, at tables on a semi private beach.
SCUBA and fishing are ,literarly, next door
