Good choice of meals and my steak open sandwich was excellent. The surroundings were very atmospheric.

Small, but atmospheric Brasserie restaurant in the castle's former kitchen. Breakfast in served in the well appointed 1851 restaurant and is a buffet style allowing one to choose exactly one's own preferences with tea/coffee and plenty of toast served as needed.

A long one here, to justify the rating.

We booked here for afternoon tea to make the most of the Bank Holiday but were very disappointed. Whilst we were seated at a pleasant table by the range in the Brasserie, we constantly had other guests standing near our table trying to be seated, who more often than not were turned away to have tea and coffee elsewhere in the building. There were only two waitresses in the Brasserie today, despite it being exceptionally busy, with the addition of a third gentleman later who turned out to be the manager.

We ordered hot drinks on being seated and whilst these arrived in a timely manner and were followed by nicely presented sandwiches and a cake stand, that was where the service ended. My fiancé was asked if he'd like a second coffee (on arrival drink refills were assured) but despite asking for another latte this did not appear until much later when we had to ask again. I was never offered a refill of my tea, however, nor did anyone come over to see if everything was OK. Other guests were also having difficulty getting service and came up to the bar by us to find where their drinks were, or to obtain and pay their bills as no one was around to ask. The sandwich fillings were egg mayonnaise, cheese and onion, turkey and beef and we had scones, macarons, carrot cake, profiteroles, a mousse dome on shortbread and mini Manchester tarts. Whilst the cakes were plentiful, they appeared store bought and the sandwiches were uninspiring. The scone was a standout element, the best by far, and came with jam and clotted cream.

Having finished most of our cakes and given up hope of any additional drinks, we waited for someone to appear to request the bill. As no one came we eventually called over to the staff at the bar. When the bill was brought to us, we advised that we would be paying with a voucher, which my fiancé had received for his birthday. The waitress was unsure how to process this and got the manager, who asked us to connect to the wifi and email the voucher to reception for his attention so it could be printed and used. We dutifully did this and advised we had done so, and were then abandoned again for at least 15 minutes whilst all three staff carried on clearing tables that had been left for some time. We eventually gave up trying to get anyone's attention and headed directly to reception, but passed the Brasserie manager in the corridor. Having asked him what we needed to do next, he assured us everything was settled. However, the voucher was worth £50 and our afternoon tea was £34.95 - sadly, the service received did not warrant a £15 tip. We advised of this and further drama ensued in reception whilst our voucher was printed and further management advice was sought as to whether a voucher for the balance could be issued. (The T&Cs clearly state the voucher could be used in full or part)

Whilst waiting, we heard another guest ask reception whether they could explore the castle and grounds having finished their own afternoon tea, but were told they couldn't because there was on-going filming onsite so it was off limits! There was no signage anywhere to indicate this, and this was exactly what we had intended to do in the afternoon. Having finally obtained our £15 voucher, we left.

We were due to attend for a family meal in May, but have little interest in returning. As you can see from previous reviews, we are not fussy and enjoy things as we find them, but good service is a must. Things can often go wrong, but what counts is how this is managed. Peckforton has a tremendously good reputation, but this will not last if the customer service here does not improve.

We felt very sorry for the young lady attempting to run the Brasserie - she clearly knew what was required, but could only be in one place at a time.

Thank you for your review.

I am sorry to hear that your recent visit has not lived up to your expectations.

Your comments do surprise me as I do not recognise them as a reflection of what I believe to be the usual high standards of Peckforton Castle.

I will however be discussing all your feedback with our food and beverage team to ensure that we are always prepared and able to deliver these standards.

With your feedback taken on board, I would hope to welcome you back to Peckforton Castle in the future.

Beautiful place however service poor. Took ages to serve us. Took ages for the food to come. Half of the stuff was missing when it came. Twice had to ask for crayons for the 2 kids to keep occupied while waiting. Large group so not a cheap visit.

Firstly - the food was fine. Though sandwiches were meant to come with coleslaw - now one of us got any out of a group of 8. Also, the cheese was missing from the sandwiches. And the drinks order was wrong. And the service was slow.
Beautiful sight, great venue, let down by poor service and lack of attention to detail.

It is imperative that we receive all feedback both positive and constructive so that we can ensure that this does not happen moving forward.
