Review of The Cedars

The Cedars
Ranked #1 of 24 things to do in Hahndorf
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 26 January 2018 via mobile

We totally enjoyed our visit to The Cedars - we went on the 11am guided tour which was so interesting as we learnt all about the early days of Hans Heysen, his family and his many magnificent works of art. The Cedar’s is certainly a must visit location when in Hahndorf.

We headed to see this house and gardens at the end of our visit to Hahndorf, knowing that we had only 45min to do so, but disappointing when we arrived, the signage told us that they closed at 4.30pm and not 5pm as published in the tourist brochures. Hopefully they will update for future guests. We had also contacted the property early in the morning knowing that we were hoping to visit but they did not return our call. Perhaps if they had we would have been alerted to the earlier closing time and endeavoured to get there sooner. $15/adult for the house and garden and $10/adult for just the garden was also not readily available on any of the brochures that we looked at.

The Cedars is best visited on a fine day. We called in on the morning we were leaving Hahndorf and as it was raining we could not take the tour of the grounds. After viewing the small gallery in the gift shop, we realised that we were missing the opportunity to learn more about two of Australia’s finest artists Hans and Nora Heysen. The artwork is this gallery provided an excellent preview of their collections. A must do visit next time.

Guided tour of house and studio runs for 60 minutes and describes Heysen's life, family and work. I enjoyed it very much, even though I am not an art expert. I had no car, so it was a 20 minute walk from Hahndorf to the house.
