We booked our reservation at Red Roof Inn Columbus - Ohio State Fairgrounds primarily because it was the midpoint of our drive from Upstate New York to Nashville, Tennessee. The ease of access from I-71, recent property renovations, the favorable Trip Advisor rating, a Long John Silver's restaurant within a 1/2 mile, reasonable rates and the amenities that were featured with their Superior King room also contributed to our decision. And we weren't disappointed. I may touch on several negative aspects of our visit, the room and property; but they certainly would not discourage us from returning or recommending the hotel to others.
Access from I-71 couldn't have been easier: Turn left at the bottom of the exit ramp, travel under the bridge and take the first right at the well marked sign. The east parking lot closest to the Front Desk is shared with the Comfort Inn next door and a wee cramped; but we didn't trust the secluded west parking lot. Although the neighborhood isn't high rent, it seemed safe enough for one night; park near one of the outside flood lights for additional vehicle security. Check-in was swift and Red Roof honored the online discounts we'd arranged from our reservation. The were out of complimentary bottled water; but my biggest gripe was there isn't a working ice machine anywhere onsite. The ongoing renovations deemed the first floor rooms uninhabitable; but a second floor elevator would be a nice touch.
Our room was clean and spacious with a comfortable bed; but I still don't like the trend of budget hotels doing away with carpeting in lieu of hardwood floors. The mini-fridge had a nice sized freezer section; which was crucial since we were traveling with meat and avoid bagged ice. The toiletries were meager, consisting of two small bars of soap and a tube of conditioning shampoo; but we didn't expect premium items like mouthwash or the elusive sewing kit found at pricier properties.
Getting back onto I-71 south the next morning was somewhat tricky; due to the median and u-turns prohibited at the closest intersection. But the access road that runs parallel to East Dublin-Granville Rd. does lead to the traffic signal and a left hand turn towards the ramp. That access road provides easy travel to the Popeye's near the parking lot, a liquor store, White Castle, Long John Silver's (our favorite) and endless restaurant options further down the road. The BP gas station adjacent to the hotel parking lot has some of the best prices in the region. We'll return next season.
