After trying and utterly failing to enjoy the hot and packed Columbus Food Truck Festival, my wife and I left the river's edge in search of a good alternative to the event. It was my birthday, so we wanted something at least somewhat special. We randomly chose Sidebar because it had good ratings and was close by. Now, Sidebar is a nice place. I think nice jeans and a collared shirt are the minimum requirement here. When we walked through the door, we were sweating profusely, had one weathered walking sneakers and tshirts with athletic shorts - hardly deserving of admittance. However, the wait staff was incredibly kind, realized our starvation and plight for food after the failed festival (we explained), and allowed us entry without question. We sat outside and had a great little view of downtown up the street. Our waitress, who was also the bartender, was just phenomenal. So accommodating and kind to us. We each ordered a drink (they were fantastic), along with spicy mussels, a pork skewer, scallops, garlic mashed potatoes, and sautéed asparagus. Every single element was incredible. The mussels were cooked perfectly and so flavorful. The pork spiced to perfection and tender. The scallops like butter under our forks. Rich, creamy mashed potatoes, with crisp, fresh asparagus to top it all off. We stuffed ourselves to the gills, and the bill actually came out cheaper than expected. Around $45 for all of that - drinks included. We will absolutely be back. What a great birthday surprise for me. I think this qualifies as our new favorite restaurant in Columbus!
