My wife and I just finished our meal at Polfareren, came up to our room at the Svalbard Hotel, and immediately decided to write a review. This was one of the best meals we have ever eaten; and we have not only travelled a fair bit (including this, our second trip to Longyearbyen) around the world, but we are food-lovers, taste-seekers, and we have relatively discerning tastes. We are also vegetarian (sometimes eat fish), so we've previously encountered some fantastic places where our options are limited or underwhelming due to our diet. However, we can say, without reservation, that we were OVERwhelmed with the delicious and meticulously prepared fare at Polfareren. We know that some kinds of foods are hard to find on Svalbard, and this makes it so that many places have somewhat limited menus -- Polfareren is no different. However, the chef and staff work with what they have to the absolute maximum of its potential and the results are impeccable. The vegetables are grown at Polar Permaculture by Benjamin Vidmar, who is genius at polar/nordic agriculture. The taste and texture of every morsel were stellar, and it almost seemed strange to see how fresh everything was, given the location near 79th northern parallel. But that was part of the magic and the standards of this superb restaurant. The appetisers were excellent; the main plates were fantastic, and the desserts were truly out of this world. We have few other words to describe our experience than OUTSTANDING. It is also important to note, the service was also wonderful -- each member of the team is knowledgeable, warm, friendly, attentive, and they keep everything running smoothly and serenely. There is no sense of pressure, and only a supportive, caring environment created by everyone in the clean, modern, attractive dining space. If you are lucky enough to travel to Svalbard, and in Longyearbyen, then whether you stay in the classy Svalbard Hotel or not, make it a point to have a meal at Polfareren. Promise, you will certainly not regret it.

I've been in this restaurant a lot, and the food is just amazing! The taste and presentation is super good.
They make big portions, so I never leave hungry from there!
Atmosphere and service is always good!
I Recommend this restaurant

I was resident at the hotel, ate there the first evening, so delicious I came back for more. On each occasion I had the Arctic Char, well presented. With only 3 "mains" on the menu, there could have been a slightly longer menu ... having said that, the food was delicious, nicely served, and eating here is a great experience.

Had a light dinner here after a long tour. The reindeer dish is the absolute best. It's lightly fried with perfect texture. The side dish mushrooms are phenomenal too. Highly recommended thanks!! :)

My husband decided to have the reindeer after seeing a man on the next table with this dish and he liked what he saw. However when his meal arrived it was a lot smaller (was this because they were running out of produce?). So much smaller that both tables had a bit of a laugh. I had the soup which had cold patches in it (awful) as though the cook had not even heated it through. The bowl the soup came in was huge and the quantity of soup in it so ridiculously small that it was difficult to get it out of the bowl. Another person had the fish which was also a very small serving. This restaurant has a problem with portion sizing and consistency and is far too expensive for what you get. I cannot recommend this restaurant. We all came away feeling hungry.
