Gurnard Pines
Reviewed 19 February 2010

We stayed for a short mid week break (M-F) for Feb half term in a 2-bed bungalow classic. Late booking taking advantage of a special offer.

Ferry (Red Funnel) Soton - Cowes bang on time both ways.

Driving into resort initial impressions were that we'd arrived at a park styled on Butlins with retro chalets lining the access road and tennis courts outside reception...however this impression was soon gone and our expectations were exceeded.

Main resort building incorporating leisure club is first class. Excellent facilities (pool, gym, kiddie play area (Monkey Mansion). Although we arrived straight from afternoon ferry so potentially one of their busiest times we were immediately 'checked in.' There were numerous staff on hand so everyone was seen very quickly.

Expecting one of the 'Butlin chalets' we were amazed to find ours was a very modern looking bungalow with an ideal layout. In turns out all the older looking chalets are privately owned with Gurnard operating all the new ones + the pine chalets. It was a 2 minute walk from the main building yet still in a quiet spot.....in fact the whole park seemed quiet all week although it was half term and fully booked....even the pool was quiet....twice we had it to ourselves!! Very peaceful.

Being really picky our bungalow missed coat hooks, scissors and a cheese grater but that is literally the only ideas for improvement we can come up with.

Our only other comparable, UK holiday park, experience has been the Penrith Centre Parcs. Gurnard Pines is far superior to this.....better value, much higher standard accommodation (we stayed in a Comfort Plus at Centre Parcs), much quieter etc etc.

We'll certainly be keeping an eye out for special offers at Gurnard Pines when we're looking for a UK short break.

We were all delighted with your review and very glad that you particularly enjoyed your stay at Gurnard Pines. We have now updated our Guest Directory folder in each holiday home with more detailed instructions in setting the temperature on the central heating system following your feedback.

And yes, the new ladies and gents changing rooms have underfloor heating.

We hope to see you again soon!

This park is in a nice area of the island, easily accessible from the ferry. Very peaceful, saw red squirrel, fox and jay all in very close vicinity! Very nice pool and gym and the ladies changing room lovely - fabulous showers!! Staff friendly and efficient and the food in the bistro was OK, basic 'pub grub' type. Kids enjoyed the 'monkey mansion' play room.

Lodge was very warm and spacious, plus had TV, DVD player, decent sofas. Sadly it was marred by being rather 'tired' and in need of an update, with lots of small issues I was concerned about such as hole in the side of a bed/missing door off bathroom cabinet/curtain rail hanging down. I reported these to reception as I was concerned that it would look like we had caused the damage.

Nice staff at reception, sent maintenance man that day to fix the curtain rail back up, and a plumber to fix leaky tap and the loo handle, so good service,

I also had to complain that it wasn't very clean, in particular the bathroom (had to clean toothpaste and hairs from the sink and clean the loo!). There was a card in lodge with name of the cleaner but no name on the 'checked by housekeeper' bit so can only assume this was a small breakdown in the usual procedures and would usually be cleaned properly!

Overall we had a good short break and the island is lovely, would like to visit again for longer. Not sure I would stay at this park next time though, unless I could check first that we had a nicer lodge...it wasn't worth what we paid.

Thank you for choosing Gurnard Pines for your holiday and for taking the time to give us your feedback.

I was delighted to read that you were impressed by our facilities, service and team members. In preparation for the main 2010 season starting at Easter, we will have carried out a comprehensive refurbishment of all of our Pine Lodges. It does mean that our prices will be going up a little more on this holiday homes this year to reflect this, but we hope our guests will appreciate the higher standard of accommodation provided. We also offer modern Bungalows which are of a very high standard and are very spacious, and are popular with families also.

Your comments about the cleaning have been passed to the resort's cleaning manager, his regional manager and their managing director. We aim for the highest standards in accommodation preparation and it is rare to have such issues, but when we do we ensure that the contract cleaning company we use takes immediate and decisive steps to avoid this happening again.

We have been able to identify your booking and so have written to you personally to reassure you that should you decide to come to Gurnard Pines again, and we hope that you do, that you will find our reputation for high standards well deserved.

28/12 to 04/01/10 This is.. it seems? a leisure gymnasium resort but takes bookings for New Year..offering finger buffet and Disco for the celebrations.... Firstly the Bistro (the bar and food area) was closed for 2 days whilst we were there... when it was open it closed at 9pm! Therefore you need to go off site to have a celebratory drink. The New Year Disco was aimed very much at children..and I would suggest the DJ was a childrens entertainer... The finger buffet was shipped in from an Iceland store and was still frozen when served... This is a place to sleep in.... not to celebrate in.... no atmosphere at all........ Wish we went somewhere else in town......

Thank you for your review; I was sorry to read that you did not enjoy your stay as much as you or we would have liked you to. We aim to promote our resort in a very honest and open way to ensure guest satisfaction and repeat customers; we carry this clarity throughout our website and also our reservations team are careful to ensure that they answer any questions put to them about our holidays honestly and openly.

Gurnard Pines does not advertise itself as perhaps the sort of holiday resort that you may have been looking for. We did specify on our website the opening times of our facilities and that during the winter that these are reduced because of fewer customers staying with us. We do specify that our facilities generally close at 9pm and this is often very popular with families as it enables us to keep the village a quiet place in the evening without guests returning to accommodation late at night from the bar.

The New Year's Eve Party was advertised as a family event, in keeping with being a family holiday resort. We did specify on our website and on other marketing that the NY Eve Party was a disco and finger buffet. The latter was provided from a local caterers; having checked with the team members on duty, they were not aware of any of the food being still frozen, nor getting any complaints on the night or subsequently as such, and was cooked before being served cold as a finger buffet.

It is unfortunate that you did not make your concerns known to us during your holiday or subsequently directly to the resort team.

On arrival staff were really friendly and helpful. Gave us a map of local area and places that we could eat. (Not many restaurants nearby but best option is to drive to East Cowes). We stayed in a 3 Bed Log cabin so was huge considering there was only two of us and the heating was brilliant! The leisure facilities were fantastic!! We used the swimming pool several times. There were a wide variety of exercise classes. We got a deal through the sun so therefore it was quite a cheap break. However, I would consider returning to Gurnard Pines for great customer service and relaxed atmosphere if only the weather was better!!

I was pleased to read that you enjoyed your stay and were satisfied with your accommodation and the facilities we provide. We do have a guest information folder in each holiday home which has listings for local restaurants, and we do also have a cafe bar on the resort for light bites, pub classics, pizzas and takeaways. Unfortunately, a number of local restaurants do close in the winter time although our reception team are happy to offer a concierge service of recommending hotels and making bookings on behalf of customers. I was pleased to read that you would be looking to return and we'd hope to see you again soon.
