Wildlife & Bird Watching
At Rothley Lodge, we have an abundance of garden wildlife and birds to be seen for the keen watchers. We are very careful to protect the wild and natural landscape within the grounds to maintain the habitat for wildlife.
We still have Red Squirrels within the grounds, although working with the national trust at Wallington Hall to keep down the spreading Grey Squirrels in the area. Roe Deer are frequent within the grounds, or you may simply see them passing along the riverbanks to quieter locations, early morning or at dusk.
If you are prepared to sit patiently and quietly down by the river, you may see the otter or the blue glistening flash of the Kingfisher flying along the Burn.
Butterflies such as Orange Tips or Meadow Browns can be seen and an abundance of Dragonflies and Damselflies.
The Birds that frequent our grounds are listed below:
Frequent Birds

Tree House & Kids Play Area (CURRENTLY UNDER CONSTRUCTION)
We are currently constructing a Tree House and Children's play area, due to be complete for use sometime in the Spring of 2018 (weather dependent).
The Treehouse and Decking may be used by both Children and Adults as a play den or a summer house raised up at a height of approximately 8ft overlooking the South facing gardens.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION
There is an unfenced pond and river in the grounds, with some significant drops in certain areas of the grounds of the property, so care needs to be taken with young children. However the property is typical countryside yet still very much an adventure playground for children but care and supervision is necessary.
The banister height is 80cm, and the gaps between the spindles are 10cm.

Perfect for a Family get-together
We rented this property for a "special" birthday so that family and friends could get together in a relaxed setting. The house was perfect as it is full of character, spacious, warm, comfortable and extremely well equipped. Great to never run out of mugs, glasses, plates or cutlery. The setting is beautiful, with walks down to the river, and an abundance of birds visiting the feeder. We were particularly delighted to see nuthatches so close to hand. Once we got used to the Aga we really enjoyed using it, and it created a wonderfully cosy atmosphere in the kitchen. There are lots of things to do in the area and something for everyone whether it is walking, golfing or visiting historic sites and buildings.
Lorraine and Alastair - you made us feel very welcome, thank you for a brilliant week!

Tranquil, comfortable and well equipped
We booked Rothley Lodge for a multigenerational family holiday. The owner has thought of everything so you don’t need to bring lots of equipment. The kitchen is well equipped making self catering easy. It was lovely cooking on an AGA again and Mary Berry’s AGA Cookbook is provided if you’ve never used one. Its isolated, rural position makes for a tranquil, relaxing break. The beds and furniture are very comfortable. The children loved playing in the grounds in the tree house and large basket swing. The owners are very helpful but don’t hover. They went out to find my parents when they couldn’t find the property! I would definitely book again if planning another break for a large party.

Heaven on earth
We couldn’t believe our good fortune staying for a week in the home where my mother and her siblings grew up.
It was a family pilgrimage from Australia to remember our parents who were married in the nearby Cambo church in 1951. The day we visited Cambo happened to be the Village Fair where we met so many delightful locals who made us feel very welcome.
The grounds of Rothley Lodge are serene with the soft twittering of birds leading down to Hart Burn with a quaint bridge and weir with water gently trickling over mossy rocks.
Belsay Hall also quite close by was well worth the visit, seeing the beautiful gardens and the magnificent Quarry Garden with fantastic trees and shrubs.
Damian & Lorraine were charming, very friendly and shared stories of their renovation of the Lodge which is finished to a high standard. The AGA stove was a hit and used several times over the week. Lorraine has supplied every possible kitchen appliance you could need.

A spacious country getaway in the heart of Northumberland.
Our family stayed for a week while we explored Northumberland for the first time. This is a beautiful home nestled in a rather fairy-tale setting with the beautiful gardens, nearby river and farmlands. It is a pretty easy drive from here to attractions like Alnwick and even closer to Cragside, as well as having easy access to stunning coastal driving routes and the North Sea. It was great for us to be so close to the coast whilst feeling like we were in the heart of the countryside!
Plus, the owners were helpful, available and ever so friendly.

Excellent
We recently stayed for a week at Rothley Lodge with our family and have to say the property is beautiful and the surrounding countryside breathtaking. The stay was made all the better for the hospitality of the owners Damien and Lorraine who were always there when we needed anything. We will definately be returning in the future

Fabulous holiday!
We came to celebrate a 50th birthday with 9 family members, ranging in age from 18 months to 64 years. We all had a fantastic time. The house is beautiful, but very comfortable and well-equipped. The grounds are amazing and we loved exploring them. Damian and Lorraine were incredibly helpful with any minor issues we had. I hope to come back and explore more of this beautiful part of the world from this lovely house.

Fantastic -immaculate welcoming family home
Rothley Lodge is perfect for a luxury stay with extended family as there is plenty of room with a large dining room and sitting room plus eat-in kitchen allowing all the family to sit and eat together whilst there is also space for those moments when you don't necessarily all want to be together. The whole house is immaculate and beautifully decorated - the kitchen is especially impressive with everything you could possibly need from Nespresso coffee maker to a stunning blue Aga in pristine condition. Lorraine and Damian are excellent hosts and nothing is too much trouble. We loved the fresh eggs every day. My daughters were encouraged to play the piano and am not sure why others have commented on blinds as certainly not an issue for us. A really lovely Christmas with wonderful family memories.

Lots to do in the area
We had a great week exploring the area with extended family to celebrate granny's 80th birthday. The house is perfect - and the owner is extremely keen that it stays that way! The rule book emailed in advance and pointed out carefully on arrival makes that very clear. You can't even close the blinds in case you crumple them. And using the piano is banned so it needs to be taken out of the particulars really. Unfortunately, one of the fridge freezers didn't work so we were a bit stuck with only one small freezer for a week for 10 people. We had to pay extra for deep cleaning as we had a dog with us, but as the dog was only allowed in the small rear porch I am not sure why we had to pay this. The gardens are extensive though, so as long as it is warm weather you can relax outside. There is lots to do in the surrounding area - National Trust houses and gardens, Alnwick Castle and gardens, the coast, Hadrian's Wall and pretty villages nearby. Overall, we made it a fantastic week but it is a shame we didn't feel we could really relax in the property.

Dear Guest
We are pleased you enjoyed your week holiday, however we are sorry you felt some negative points regarding the property and your stay.
Just to clarify, you refer to a 'rule book' which is in fact a guide to the property which explains everything you need to know for safety, security, emergencies and details to make your stay comfortable. Most guests really appreciate the guide and commented positively in previous reviews.
The unfortunate situation with the fridge freezer, could not have been replaced in time for your stay, however replaced now. The property does have sufficient refrigeration with two large capacity 60/40 fridge freezers and one medium capacity separate fridge, which has always proved sufficient for all guest parties.
The piano is not banned from use, we actually encourage use of the grand piano, however we do always ask guests to respect the age of 1860 and handle with care due to its delicate nature.
Unfortunately we do need to charge an additional fee for dogs and deep cleaning to ensure the property is free from dog odours and hairs for follow on guests who may have allergies. Our terms do make it clear that dogs are allowed but not allowed on the furnishings or beds and must sleep in their own dog basket in the rear porch.
We are extremely sorry you felt you couldn't relax, we aim to make the property as relaxing as its location and most guests we believe do in fact find the experience very relaxing which previous reviews show.
We thank you for your valued booking and your honesty in your review.
Kindest regards

Beautiful house, Awesome location, Lovely host
Any pictures of Rothley Lodge and the considerable surroundings it sit in do not do it justice - It is quiet simply stunning. We stayed for 4 nights to celebrate a family birthday with 8 adults, 3 exuberant children and a toddler and created a family memory that will stay with us forever. The house is large with every conceivable luxury and easily swallowed us all without us ever being on top of each other. Outside is even better. Lichen covered steps, narrow walkways and forgotten tree covered alcoves wind down to the bubbling river bank far below - absolutely magical !! and to cap it all... Lorraine the owner who lives "up the lane" couldn't have been nicer even taking the time to take the children egg hunting - thanks Lorraine, hope to see you and Rothley Lodge again one day
