Visited mid week Tuesday and Wednesday 14th/15th September in a group of 3 adults in our 20s. Stayed in the enchanted village and purchased 2 day entry to the park. The longest we queued for a ride was 20minutes (Rita and The Smiler) walked straight onto 13, oblivion, nemesis, hex, spinball and Galactica x2 both days. Really good day out. Took advantage of the app that displays the queue times however I wish they would still offer paper maps as the one one the app can be difficult to see and make sense of.
The reason I’ve knocked a star off this review is because of the queuing system for the new ride Wickerman. After queuing, a large group is directed into a room where a story is played on screen before heading toward the ride. When directed into the room people tend to push there way forward knowing when the doors open they can rush first on the ride. This is really silly and unorganised. A large group of teen boys were pushing aggressively and just generally being obnoxious swearing and chanting. People then started shouting and panicking asking them to stop. As this was happening the room goes into complete darkness as the story plays. It’s dangerous and not COVID safe we were packed together shoulder to shoulder whilst everyone starts screaming at each other that they are pushing. Then when the story is finished the doors open and you have to leave the room in darkness whilst everyone pushes and trips over each other.
On the second day the exact same thing happened when everyone rushed forward pushing their way to the front of the room and I could hear someone shouting that people were hurting her and to stop pushing. In the middle of all this people have lost their friends in the darkness and the whole thing just descends into utter chaos. It’s a serious accident waiting to happen and someone is going to end up crushed or stood on. I CANNOT understand how this has been set up this way. The ride hex has a similar set up and is so much more organised that it doesn’t end up like this.
Some of the best rides in the country (the smiler is INCREDIBLE).
Good Oktoberfest entertainment.
Beautifully maintained park and heritage.
Love the themes and story’s of the rides.
Wicker man queuing.
Really uncomfortable beds in enchanted village.
Poor signage around the park.
Toilets could be cleaner.
Download the app and keep checking queue times.
If you are staying in the hotel accommodation skip the monorail! You can enter the park via the ‘hotel entrance’ this takes you in at the forbidden forest and helps beat the morning queues. It’s a short 10 minute walk this way and means you can get straight onto nemesis and galactica. The hotel staff don’t seem to tell you about this entrance and it seems to be only known about via word of mouth from other guests. You can also renter the park a hour earlier than the public however the rides aren’t open.
At lunch time the rides are at the quietest when people go to eat try eating late or early and use this as ride time to beat the queues.
Take snacks and drinks in a cool bag if you are on a budget!
13 is always closed be prepared for it to always be closed. It’s been like this for years every time I visit. Managed to ride by checking the app and catching it when it reopened.
You can use the facilities in all the hotels we visited the atrium in Alton towers hotel and enjoyed the cheesy entertainment and drinks on the evening.
If you are clinically vulnerable from COVID this isn’t a place for you to visit at the moment. Very crowded, no social distancing and no masks despite being recommended by the park. (Not the parks fault they recommend all of this however the masses have chosen to ignore it and it would be impossible for them to enforce due to sheer number of visitors)
