You can feed yourself with pancakes by the pond! And for $2 you can get fish food from dispensers and feed the fish, this is very exciting and enjoyable.
Even a brief visit is worth it, if you enjoy feeding the big (5 kgs?) fish. When reception is closed,( 5pm .)access to gardens is through the gate to the left and there is a box to leave your entry fee in.Its good to have correct change.

Fascinating, quirky and historically important - especially to fishermen!

Great place to stop if you are on the way to or from Mt Field NP but also an ideal spot to make a day of it and have a picnic right beside the Plenty River amongst one of the best collection of trees in Tasmania. The oldest hatchery in Australia has heaps of big salmon and trout in ponds that kids and adults can take delight in feeding. $8 entry for adults and $2 for a container of fish food makes it a wallet friendly experience. Didn't try the food (the human variety or that for the fishes) but intend to go back in the near future.

Thank Peter U
