Relaxing Weekend at Bear Run Cabin

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 4 Oct 2020
My wife and I spent three nights in the Bear Run cabin - just around the corner from the Lodge. The cabin has two bedrooms, each with a queen bed. The living room is comfortable with two log-frame couches. The wood burning stove is available for use Oct-Apr, so we were the first to use it for over six months. We emailed the owners as I couldn't initially get the door to the wood burning stove to open...no response (probably thought if we couldn't figure out how to open a door we shouldn't use it). The door was simply 'froze' from moisture/rust and opened with substantial lifting up on the handle. We thoroughly enjoyed one night's use of the stove, while having bonfires in the fire pit in the backyard of the cabin the other two nights. We were going to stop by the winery on Saturday night, but it was closed for a private wedding (not a big deal). We instead enjoyed a bottle of wine in the cabin. We also enjoyed 15-20 minutes each night in the hot tub (despite it seeming to be a bit too high on chlorine/chemicals as we got a bit itchy after getting out of the hot tub...not a big deal). Overall a very relaxing weekend.

I cancelled September 2020 lodging back in January of this year. The owner sent me a confirmation code. At the beginning of this month I had a withdrawal from my bank account for $1440 from Indian Bear Lodge. I immediately tried phone, email, website contact form, and fb messenger. She contacted me back via fb. She was angry and did not once apologize. She said that she would take care of it, but I had to dispute the transaction with my bank. This is not the time for a business to withdraw someone's money in error.

Whatever level comes after immaculate - this place is at it. Very clean, tidy, tastefully and functionally arranged. We enjoyed the hot tub. Our dogs had all the freedom to run around and Gabbie was happy to play with them. The winery offers good selection of wines and the food is delicious. We'll go again.

Room tip: Book in advance. But if you don't, call Sherry and she will help.

Indian Bear Lodge is a beautiful property with 10 cabins which hold between 2-35 guests. It has beautiful open fields and woods with groomed hiking trails throughout. (A lot of cabin places say they have trails, but these are nice and even kid friendly.) Besides the cabins there are two main features which are the lake and the winery.

The lake (large pond) has a pebble beach with lots of kayaks, canoes, floating trampoline and dock, all available for guests (you don't have to sign up or pay extra). There were lots of people when we went, but were still able to use the gear and have fun.

There is a winery/restaurant on site. It has limited hours but we were able to eat dinner there both nights and even had live outdoor music and dancing. The winery and music are kid friendly, but they do not have highchairs.

We stayed in the Lake View Ranch cabin on Friday - Saturday nights for mom's birthday. Myself, mom, sister, her husband and 1-year old. This cabin could easily accommodate 3 couples. Well decorated, full kitchen, large decks and nice fire pit area. It was too warm to want to use the hot tub but had the option. Our cabin was close to the winery so we could walk to dinner and enjoy the music from our own deck. We were 200" from both the winery and lake. We arrived about an hour early and since our cabin was ready they did let us go on in. Thanks!

Here's why I could only give 4 stars: Making a reservation was difficult... no response when tried booking online and then no answer to the voicemails I left. Finally got through to someone who said they'd call back but never did. Be persistent... our stay was really nice, so it was worth it! Our cabin was musty (especially the bunk-bed room) and couldn't open the windows on that end of the cabin (one let in a flood of ants and the other fell out of the frame). Each bedroom has a small shelf to put your things but no dressers/closet. Lighting could be improved. I would not let these things prevent you from staying here!

It's a casual relaxed atmosphere. The cabins, lake, and winery are nice, and they really put a lot into maintaining the grounds which are immaculate. We all had a really good, relaxing time and would recommend Indian Bear Lodge for sure.

PS you may see some dogs and cats roaming around, which was a welcomed site! The pretty black kitty is super friendly and got into our cabin once (we had to pick her up to put her back outside) and she even climbed in the car when packing up to leave! We're animal lovers so it was okay but FYI.

Room tip: Main Lodge has a big parking area and looks like you can wander in but it is a private rental, so steer clear unless staying there.

The lodge is quite large and has several amenities. Very nice for a large family gathering, or family/friends type of reunion. Nice kitchen, fire pit, rec room, etc. The only issues are that people visiting the vineyard and other things/places around there, seem to think the lodge is a place for people just to hang out, not for a family rental. Apparently some of the staff around the area (vineyard, restaurant, etc) seem to believe that, as well, as I guess they haven't been educated to the fact that it's not. It happens a bit, and it would be nice if the owner would do something about it. Tell the workers in the area that the place is a family rental, not just a hangout place for people who are not renting the place.

A group I belong to rented the Little Rock Lodge, which is a part of the Indian Bear Lodge. We were blown away by what the lodge had to offer. The bedrooms were nice. The kitchen was large enough to prepare meals for our group of 27 people. But I think the favorite was the game room/bar. The view of the area around the lodge was beautiful.
