Horsetail Falls- Columbia River Gorge
Ranked #5 of 72 things to do in Hood River

This place is a beautiful place. The trail is excellent. But, unfortunately, there was a major forest fire in the Columbia Gorge this past summer, 2017. As of March, 2018, this falls is not open to the public. In fact, the *only* trail currently open is Latourell Falls. It's a shame, but crews are busy restoring trails and making sure the roads are safe from landslides and falling trees from the burn. Anticipated opening time of many trails is mid summer to fall. Check Friends of the Gorge for updates.

I've hiked most of the gorge including numerous waterfalls - Horsetail is right alongside the highway so no hike is involved - plenty are available though. Right now (early 2018) most Gorge attractions are off limits from the 2017 fire so check the websites to make sure.

Horsetail Falls was not far north of Multnomah Falls and, right off the road, there was easier access to the falls and the swimming hole at its base. It seemed to be a popular summer place for locals and so far, no commercial buildings here. There was no real parking area so people lined up along Rt 30 to park.

August 23, 2017 - As part of our day to see as many falls as possible, we stopped at Horsetail Falls and we were not disappointed. After a short walk from the parking area, we were in a position to see the falls. If you wanted to take a slightly longer walk, you could actually position yourself to be able to walk under the falls. Either way, the Housetail Falls is beautiful.

Absolutely beautiful waterfalls. Park right off the the road and walk right up to the falls. You can walk down to the pool of water at the bottom of the falls and sit and enjoy.
