The pork flat iron steak was juicy, tender, and very flavorful. Service was friendly but inconsistent.

The Outpost is a somewhat rustic/western atmosphere that also manages to feel like home. I found the place to be clean and inviting. Our server was polite, professional and friendly.
One of us had fish and chips, another chicken strips and the third had cob salad and all arrived in under 12 minutes properly prepared and cooked.
This is a pub and grill.

We had seen good ratings for The Outpost so decided to stop for lunch as we passed through John Day on a road trip. We weren't disappointed. Though service was a little slow, we weren't in a big rush so didn't mind. The servers were friendly. They have a small gift shop at the entrance to the restaurant.

We were there a few days before the recent eclipse. The Outpost, as well as other restaurants in town, had limited "eclipse" menus as they are not set up to accommodate the number of people in town for the celestial event. Food was very good and the service was fine. I recommend the fish and chips.

We discovered this gem by accident - it was late at night during a trip through a more remote part of Oregon and we were hungry, but a bit wary of what looked like a bar from the outside. Inside was a large, woodsy restaurant with friendly and helpful servers, and we cautiously asked the hostess of this ranching/farming community establishment (which are not always big fans of the gluten-free traveler) if they had gluten-free pizza crust? Wonders of wonders - they had the best gluten free pizza we've had from a restaurant. Not that it's artisan level, but compared to the cardboard from restaurants we're used to, it was yummy, chewy and almost yeasty. I fully expected my insides to tell me it was actually a gluten-filled crust, but it happily it did not.
We came back the next morning for breakfast, ordering just eggs and bacon, when our server informed us they had gluten-free pancakes. Oh happy day! They were very good pancakes and we only wish this friendly restaurant was in our home town. From the decor to the food to the servers, it was a great home town diner experience. Highly recommend!
(Our 12" pizzas cost $13 and $16, and our bacon, egg and pancake breakfast cost $11 each).
