Unexpected surprise. Went there with my vegan hubby expecting him to have very few options. He got brussel sprouts, polenta fries and a hummus platter. They were all on the happy hour menu and all were delicious and big portions. Kids menu was also great-son got popcorn shrimp. Delicious and also big portion. I had crab cocktail. It was the only item with a small portion. It was good though. The desserts were also super yummy.

We went to the "sister restaurant" Jake's Crawfish earlier so we dropped in here as we had a desire for fish & chips. This was a mess from the opening bell. We ordered 2 Diet Cokes and 2 plain waters to start. A woman who seemed barely conscious brought out 1 D.C. and 2 sparkling waters. It took a couple tries to get these straightened out, and the waiter firmly tossed the lady deep under the bus. The biggest problem was the food. The fish had a batter that resembled leather, hard to cut and not crunchy. Certainly not tasty. The fish was advertised as Alaskan cod, but it tasted more like something from the river. My wife had a butter leaf salad which was OK. Overall, however, dinner was not good, especially in light of the superb dinner we had the night before at Jakes Crawfish. Not sure where the disconnect here was, if everyone had a bad night, but it was not good at all.

Jake's in the Sentinel hotel has a great bar ambience for those of us who actually want to talk to each other without screaming across a table. The ceilings are high, the music and lights are low.

The historic wood trim and ornately tiled floors give that "Old Portland" feel.

The drinks are great and the happy hour menu is fabulous. $5 for an enormous cheeseburger. Also, awesome roasted Brussels sprouts.

We were in downtown Portland looking for someplace for lunch when we passed Jake's Grill with its white tablecloths and white coat servers. It looked expensive and we were in jeans, but we decided to try it anyway. The restaurant's interior is amazing and takes you back to another era. The well dressed waiter offered us menus and described the specials. My husband ordered the fish and chips and I ordered short ribs. Both were excellent and the prices were astoundingly low, considering the service, the food and the restaurant's ambiance. This was just a lucky choice for great lunch. Highly recommend.

Very busy place with excellent service. The location is right down town. The food was flavourful and well portioned. Nice old place that I would recommend.
