“Shaded Gravel Ride”
Review of Perkiomen Trail

I've been looking for some gravel trails to ride my new bicycle, which is designed for this type of riding, "gravel grinding" as its called. The Perkiomen Trail was a solid test. About 85% of the trail is gravel and a similar amount is shaded, which made the ride about as good as it can be. I started at Oaks were there is plenty of parking and headed north toward Green Lane. There are numerous crossings of the creek offering pleasant vistas. Also you'll find some parks along the way to picnic or relax. Please use the trash recepticals or take your trash with you. There is a significant hill near Green Lane, a 12% grade. Makes for a challenging climb. Enjoy the beauty.

I have been using this trail for years, and it's great. People run or ride bikes on the trial. It can get a little crowded on the weekends. From Lower Perk park towards Manayunk it is paved, so a road bike or any type of bike is good. From Lower Perk park towards Green Lane it's mostly gravel, so a hybrid or mountain bike is best. They did just pave the trail near Spring Mountain, a very challenging hill to climb on a bike.
Note- this is not a good trail to train a youngster to ride a bike, too much traffic on the trail.
