Lovely health and fitness retreat

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 19 Aug 2019via mobile
I stayed over a weekend my first time since I was looking for a health retreat. You can follow the schedule of the day and everything is right there. The exercises were beginner to moderate level and only 30 minutes long. They were great though. A lot of yoga. I felt I needed more cardio, strength training and sweating so you go to the first gym for the treadmill, machines, and weights. The hiking was good but wish it was about 4 hours instead of two. You can go off on your own to see an arboretum or museum. The food was very delicious, homemade, use their own herbs grown in their herb garden and they know how to portion for weight management. However, a weekend isn’t long enough to adjust to the sudden change in your meals you are used to so I felt hungry the first two days but they were delicious meals and I adjusted. I wish the patio was open for dining also. You can use the pool at any time and attend pool yoga exercises. Our instructors were great. The price is what you think it to be according to how much money you are open to spend and can do for a health retreat. They have spa services on site and my massage was magnificent. The people I met were wonderful and charming. A weekend is okay but a full week there is what is best. You will see results in your weight and overall muscle to

spent 5wks this may, lost 11lb & 1 1/2 sizes. excellent exercise program in a nice studio, good pool area and hiking program (not too strenuous). some men come just to play golf nearby. the food is good and staff tries to accommodate all issues and is generally very helpful. the decor is dated but evrything is spotlessly clean and comfortable. if you are looking for an uppity place to show off cloths and do spa services all day this is not for you. this is a no pressure laid back place where you can relax and do as much or as little as you want without being judged on appearance or ability. the only drawback is noise on the side facing the road but its not a big deal. won't be disappointed if you come

I was searching the internet, looking for a more reasonably priced alternative to the luxury spa destinations within driving distance of New York City. This caught my interest, and I stayed for three nights last October. I was very pleased and am looking to return again this year. A nice, cozy, "country inn" atmosphere, very low key and friendly. All of the meals are chef prepared, and they do not disappoint -- you do not walk away hungry, but rather pleased and satisfied. Did two of the beautiful hiking outings -- the guides know the area well. They had a guest lecturer who is a nutritionist. Had a lovely massage (which is included in the price of the three-night stay) by a massage therapist who went above and beyond. Nice, clean room. Met nice people during my stay and even made a new friend who lives not far from me in Queens! You can make the trip what you want -- active, restful, or somewhere in between. 1/2 the price of the luxury spas, within a good driving distance from NY -- a good value. Good for solo travel, girlfriends' getaway, sisters, couples. Looking forward to going back

This low key, healthy Spa offers good choice of exercise classes for all levels, healthy 3 daily meals, massages, facial, etc.
A great place to detox from daily routine or stress.
Good alone, or with spouse, or with a friend. Not for children.

My husband and I spent 4 days at Deerfield. I had been there about 10 years before. I remembered loving it (and losing 5 pounds). This time, my husband came along because he is too ill for me to leave at home. I thought he would at least make it to meals but he ended up staying in bed literally the entire visit. It was the most caring, supportive, healing experience I've ever had. I can only begin to describe how everyone, staff and guests, went out of their way to take care of both of us, physically and emotionally. I was surrounded by (mostly) women -- some of whom had been through similar experiences. Every single person asked about my husband every day, at every meal. After being an isolated, 24/7 caregiver for over 2 years, I felt like my soul was getting a spa treatment! The staff (Linda) even arranged for him to get a reiki massage in the room, which to my amazement he actually loved. I took classes, went on a hike, sat and talked to people at (DELICIOUS) meals. And the chef was so kind -- my husband wasn't eating anything but the chef persevered until we found a smoothy he could tolerate, and they left a quart of it in the fridge so I could go get it whenever he was willing to take some. My son also surprised me and came to visit from NYC. The staff was so kind about preparing meals for him, and for both of us to take back to eat in the room. Also, Anne Marie, the "mermaid trainer," happened to be there while we were, and she's a very special spiritual guide (and physical trainer -- her pool workout was amazing!). Every single person there, staff and guests, made our visit the most healing experience we've had on this sad journey. If they could make us feel as good as they did, just imagine how they make healthy people feel! (No, don't imagine. Make a reservation today!)

I have been staying here for several days at a time over the past few years - starting with the owner, Joan, Deerfield is a welcoming, friendly and extremely comfortable retreat. The staff is extremely professional and knowledgeable - from the fitness instructors and yoga teachers to the hike leaders. The hiking in the Poconos is incredible - all trails (including the nearby Appalachian Trial) have beautiful "pay offs" with views and waterfalls. The food is gourmet quality and beautifully presented. If you come to jump start weight loss (like I did) you will be very pleasantly surprised with your success. I can't recommend Deerfield enough. I have always traveled here alone and I have met several people who have become close friends. This is a very special place, with "healing powers" I like to say. Please go and see for yourself!
