This was a last minute booking and so we had not researched well. The reviews are accurate. The place is very strange. We paid a deluxe rate and had high expectations from the website but were disappointed. The bar staff were all warm and welcoming but there were just too many things that went wrong. We are generally tolerant travellers and were accepting but were frustrated that management didn't make more of an effort to apologise when things were not right. Getting in to the place is a nightmare. The owner clearly wanted to impress his big spend on a (tiny) pool by forcing all customers to enter via a backdoor with poor signage and lighting. The bar area is lovely (if a little overwhelming with the owners memorabilia) but the faults behind the flash started to emerge quickly - the wifi was "down" throughout our stay, our room (outside and off the pool area) required a dangerous and unlit set of stairs down to the door. The fittings (clearly expensive) were struggling. We went in for a meal - we saw no other customers the entire trip. The food was expensive - £15 for a mushroom linguine was the only veggie option and was pitifully small and had barely met a mushroom. The lamb (£25) was not cooked well and the minted potatoes were not minted. The impression was the chef was off and the meal had been cobbled together. After a long day we would have been happy with simpler fare if that was all available - but the menu required a bigger spend and so higher expectations. Throughout our meal the main lights repeatedly went off (I see experienced by other reviewers) we did not receive any compensation! We went back to our room to relax and with no wifi tried the TV - but no signal and the hanging wires showed the TV was already known to be broken. We called reception and were offered another room but by this time we had had enough and just went to bed. The late check out and breakfast was appreciated but ... our room kettle didn't work! Breakfast was cooked well - more mushrooms on the breakfast than on the evening meal! The place could be lovely but there needs to be better acknowledgment and recompense when the basics are not there. Especially if advertising as a small boutique hotel. Sadly we left with a sense of fur coat and no knickers rather than a karmic sanctum!
