Challenged myself to ice skating for the first time in over 30 years! The attendants were all nice and even though it was a little crowded once I was out on the ice rink, I am still glad I did it! After skating for about an hour, we went indoors to see the gingerbread houses display. May just have to make this a yearly tradition.

On the out side is a very large tree surrounded by an ice rink, much like Rockefeller Center in New York City. On the inside is another large tree with displays from quite a few countries that have life-sized replicas of those countries version of Santa Claus with an explanation of their traditions. These were very nice. In addition, the center hosts an annual ginger bread house building competition made by families, school groups, scouts, etc. There were literally thousands of ginger bread creations. It was GREAT! Nearby is the Holiday Market that you can walk to also.

If you're staying downtown and want to be near walkable restaurants, this place is pretty good. We are from cleveland and during the holidays, the ice rink makes Cleveland's ice rink look like a puddle.

Most interesting architecture in Pittsburgh. Plus, there's a nice plaza around the buildings. Downtown Pittsburgh has come a long way in the past 15 years.

I highly recommend visiting PPG Place during the holidays. They have a displays of Santa Claus around the world inside. They also have many gingerbread houses displayed inside too all of them made by children from Pittsburgh area schools. Outside, they have an ice skating rink. Again, I highly recommend visiting PPG Place during the holidays.
