Disappointing stay in an outdated inn

3.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 29 Aug 2024
I gave the Inn the courtesy of sending them this email on 2 occasions. It has been 2 weeks and they did not respond:

We’ve stayed at the inn many times through the years. My niece and nephew worked there for a number of years so we held are special occasions there. Our clan stayed there 8/17 after a funeral mass for a family member. Our room was 327. King bed was pushed against wall so the only way out for me was by crawling from front to back. I’m in my 70”s so not an option. I had to wake my husband up every time I needed the bathroom so I could get out! The bathroom door was too big so couldn’t be opened or closed without much effort and noise. Empty tissue box in bathroom and dead ladybug on dresser. Almost killed myself on the step down from bathroom. We checked out at 6:30 am after a sleepiness night. All this for the bargain price of $300. My son requested a room with 2 beds since there are 5 of them. He got 2 full size beds!!! One of the kids had to sleep with another family member. We didn’t do anything about the rooms because we didn’t want to make a fuss and upset the family. The Shawnee has been run down and outdated for as long as I can remember but to give us these 2 terrible rooms for that outrageous “group rate” Is awful. My review will be put on trip advisor.

Room Tip: Good place if you’re a golfer. Otherwise pretty expensive

Dear NYDuck
I apologize for your experience. I am not sure where your review went, but please feel free to contact me personally. Your niece and nephew have my information. The size of our rooms has always been a challenge. We are looking for solutions as we make some changes. The hotel standard has changed to two queen beds in a guest room. Being 113 years old, our room sizes are challenging to fit the larger beds. Something we are conscience of and looking at creative ways to solve this issue and keep guests happy. Rest assured I have shared this review with our staff and ownership. Your family is important to us. We have a long history and I want to personally apologize for your issues. Thank you for sharing and please feel free to reach out to me.

My husband and I took our 3.5 yo daughter to Shawnee this past weekend and had the most wonderful experience. We lucked out with great weather and kicked off our weekend with a river trip with stunning views and good company. The river really is a peaceful place. We followed it up with a visit to the brewery, which absolutely exceeded expectations (and we've been to A LOT of breweries). My daughter especially loved the live music. She danced for an hour! We sugared her up and stayed up late for the Stargazing tour, which she absolutely loved. She ended up falling asleep, but we enjoyed it all the same. The next morning, after a relaxing breakfast in the River Room, we drove about 15 minutes and hiked around Bushkill Falls. It was stunning, and our daughter had a blast! (get there early on the weekends). We bopped around Main Street, and then headed back for a historic tram tour + candle making at Shawnee Inn. It was so interesting to see different parts of the property and my daughter couldn't wait to give her candle to Nana. We indulged at the Gem & Keystone (get the rhubarb + berry crumble), and then enjoyed some family golf on the Par 3 course. Of course, we ended up back at the brewery (duh) and enjoyed more live music. We even ordered a pizza (even though we already ate because it's just that good). We met so many fun people - employees and guests - and could have stayed longer. We barely spent any time in our room, as it should be and we can't wait to return.

I have led numerous golf groups to the Shawnee Inn and Shawnee Golf Resort. Our 7/31 to 8/02/24 trip to the golf resort was another memorable visit. Although in close proximity to us in Harrisburg, PA, we feel like we are a world away in the Poconos. We enjoyed a great golf experience on a course with lots of history and that is very well maintained. We obtained a good rate with GroupGolfer vouchers for a Stay and Play package and the inn offered a discounted rate to extend our stay a second night. The accommodations at the inn are comfortable, combining history and antiquity with modern amenities. The staff at the inn, in the restaurants, in the golf pro shop, and on the golf course are friendly, attentive, and hospitable. They included some nice thoughtful gestures throughout our stay (housekeeping room service in the mornings, cookies in the evening, personalized cards with the next day forecast, optional complimentary activities (i.e. S'mores over a campfire and the new history museum in the Gleason Room, welcome messages as our date of arrival drew closer as well as the opportunity to extend our stay at a discounted nightly rate ... which we did). And the resort is located alongside the Delaware River and in close proximity to other restaurants, attractions, and activities in the area. We will return ... again and again.

Room tip: Check with the front desk for optional excursions and activities (some with a fee; others are complimentary inclusions for resort guests).

We went for a golf weekend. The golf course was in exceptional condition. We had a one night stay and enjoyed our time very much. The resort gave us a nostalgic vibe. The room was clean and the bed was very comfortable. The resort had daily complimentary activities to the guest which was an added bonus. There was live music in the evening which was amazing along with the s’mores around the camp fire. I would definitely recommend this resort.

Shawnee has all the ingredients for a first class resort. Unfortunately, it falls short.

On the positive side, it’s conveniently close to NYC, NJ and Philadelphia. The golf course, an A.W. Tillinghast design, is very enjoyable. It’s in good condition, although the greens are very slow. We enjoyed our meal at the Gem and Keystone Tavern. The pretzel and cheddar beer dip was delish. The breakfast buffet is adequate. Nothing special, but something for everyone.

The hotel is old and wants for refurbishing. Unfortunately, I don’t think the number of guests allows them to renovate. It appears to me that the golf course, which has private members, keeps the place afloat. Our room was tiny. We had a modernized bathroom, about the size of a cruise ship facility. The dresser was inadequate for 2 people and one drawer wouldn’t stay closed. We didn’t spend much time in the room..

Shawnee has lots of outdoor amenities: pitch and putt, outdated tennis courts (lined for pickleball, but using tennis net 👎🏻), canoeing and kayaking and a putting green in front of the hotel. We took the 3 mile kayaking trip. The Delaware River is placid and very shallow. Nice leisurely paddle.

It seems like a perfect location for a casino. Not sure what it would take.

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your feedback. We are proud to be one of the last historic, family-owned resorts in this area that provides a truly beautiful location for an affordable and unpretentious stay with plenty of unique experiences you can't get everywhere. Our rooms are on the smaller side, but comfortable for sleeping; and as you mentioned, they aren't meant to spend time in. The beauty of our property is to take on all the wonderful amenities and activities from golf, to a river trip, to enjoying the company of others over delicious food, or over some of our own craft brews, listening to live music that we have here nightly, and/or simply enjoying the complimentary activities we offer daily. We hope we have the opportunity to welcome you back again some day to enjoy again a lot of what you were able to enjoy while you were here recently. We do have some upgraded rooms and suites that you may find more suitable. Please call our reservations team directly at 800-SHAWNEE and they would love to assist you in choosing the best room for your needs! Thank you again for sharing.

I recently experienced my first stay at Shawnee Resort and was thoroughly impressed! I discovered a fantastic golf package that was well worth the price. The package included a stay in a queen room at the main, historic inn, complete with an updated bathroom, a round of golf for two, a bottle of wine, and a complimentary breakfast in the morning.

The historic inn exudes charm, retaining many of its original features. While some may find these aspects outdated, they truly enhance the unique atmosphere of the place. The resort's beautiful setting further adds to its appeal.

The golf course was in excellent condition, even though it was bustling with visitors for Father's Day weekend. The staff were exceptionally friendly, making our stay even more enjoyable.

Guests can choose from an onsite brewery and various restaurants, along with a range of scheduled activities suitable for everyone. It was a wonderful overnight getaway that we thoroughly enjoyed!

Room tip: Plan for a longer round of golf if you're playing! Bring cash for 28th Hole (drinks) and restaurant out on the course.
