Winter road conditions--ice, sleet, foolish drivers--led us to make an unexpected overnight stop in the middle of a four-hour drive. We had two rooms, both clean and comfortable. The staff members we interacted with were very nice and helpful.
There were a few brief power flickers the next morning, enough to disturb the room clocks and the pancake maker in the breakfast room. Maria, the person staffing the complimentary breakfast, not only attended promptly to restarting the pancake maker, but offered to bring me a plate of pancakes when it was ready. When the power went out again, shutting down the elevators, two other staffers helped us get down the unlit stairway with our luggage. A third person stood by to open the automatic door for us. The parking lot was cleared of snow.
The trip was much longer than expected and fairly stressful, but the staff at the Holiday Inn made it much less unpleasant than it could have been.
