We have just returned from a 9 days in South Carolina, of which, we spent 4 days in the Charleston area. Ed Grimball's tour was THE HIGHLIGHT of our Charleston visit. We arrived on Sunday 11/11/07 @ 9:15 near the Pineapple Fountain on the Charleston waterfront, Ed arrived promptly at 9:25, introduced himself and the other tour members and off we went into the city.
Charleston is very quiet, on a Sunday morning, not crowded and easy to navigate the small streets. It is also easy to find parking on the street…not so later in day. With the cool morning air and the city virtually to ourselves, we were able to absorb Ed’s southern style and most of all, his deep knowledge of the history, architecture and change this city has undergone over the past 300+ years.
Ed told us to relax and enjoy ourselves…and we did so, thoroughly. We were a group of 4 out of a total of 6 tour members. It was especially nice to be in such a small group; Ed says the groups are limited to 20 at the most.
We heard about the history of the city, it’s pivotal position in America’s preservation of historic landmark buildings, the great earthquake in 1886 and scores of informational tidbits that we would never been able to glean without Ed’s masterful touring abilities and his obvious love for his city of origin. During the tour, there were countless other tours that passed near us. Most of the other tours did not appear to have such an energetic and caring tour guide, most of them appeared to be commercialized. Ed is the one and only tour guide of Ed Grimball tours. If you book with Ed, you get Ed…and this is clearly a benefit. The tour is advertised as 2 hours, we ended at 3 hours and Ed offered to stay as long as we had questions. Clearly Ed loves what he does, noting that he retired from a career to start this tour business…that fact mostly says it all. Don’t miss the pictures below; you will see Ed talks with his hands as much as he does verbally.
If you appreciate history and have a desire to learn about this storied and lovely city, Ed Grimball’s tour is a “CAN'T MISS ”, “MUST DO”. On a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being the best, Ed's tour is a 12.
We found out about this tour on trip advisor, only 2 reviews, so we decided to find out for ourselves and fortunately Ed exceeded our expectations. We will take another Ed Grimball tour on our next visit, as there is so much to learn about this city, that we felt we could take his tours over and over and not experience much duplication.
