Rebel Pie is dining gem in the Pee Dee. It's a locally owned and operated wood-fired pizza place that emphasizes local ingredients (and beverages) and then serves them up in tasty combinations on tasty 11 (maybe its 12) inch pies. These are some unique pizzas, although most of the ingredient combinations are surprisingly simple. Two of the best might be the Margherita (a pile of mozzerella, fresh basil and olive oil) and the Quattro Formaggio (four cheeses -- including, in this case, feta or local goat cheese). Yes, those formulations have been done before but combined with a delicious crust and just a little twist here and there ... well, it's just a great dish. More sophisticated is the Chicken Pesto pie, with Homemade pesto sauce, fresh mozzarella, chicken, pine nuts, sun-dried tomato and basil. And you may not even need a menu. The "pie of the month" is always interesting so you could just have that. Not full yet? There a four dessert pies on the menu! Pizza is the star here. There are a few appetizers and an unbelievably fresh salad (the Rebel -- big enough to split, it includes homemade crostini croutons and delicious slivers of pepperoni, along whatever the freshest greens their local suppliers can provide). There's a good selection of craft beers, most from the region or state. The wine list is minimal but serviceable. Service is not a strong point -- younger family members often pitch in and learn on the job -- but everyone tries hard and wants to do right. Pizzas are available to-go, but that's not recommended. The subtle flavors here are meant to be consumed right of the oven. Besides, who could wait for a 10-minute drive home?
